996 Difficulty in selecting reverse

Can anybody help! my cousin has a 1998 996 with a gear selection problem. It is only when trying to select reverse gear no other gears are affected and it is the same hot or cold. I have not seen the car myself but belive he can now not select reverse at all.Is reverse gear selected by its own cable? i can not belive that something has gone within the gearbox! Any help would be appreciated.

where are you in the country...

reverse has not got its own cable but needs to pushed pretty hard to move the selector rod inside gearbox.
