Hello Porkers,
having lurked and used the search facility so many times over the last year I've finally gone and done it!! In the bleak mid winter I bought a 2002 midnight blue manual 996 tt X50 and WOW. I never thought anything could be so quick and so composed and that's with me driving in a "learn the ropes" fashion. The problem with this car is that I can see that the mileage I indicated to my insurance Co is going to be blown out of the water. I've had it for six weeks and have done 1250 miles in all weathers and it is so moreish. Whilst I do not want to throw money away making it a high miler I can't really see any reason not to use it to its full and have booked it on a few european trips already.
So my initial thoughts are that it is incredible in bad weather with the ability to put down the power in standing water v impressive and the ride being firm but not rattely. The roads I have in Sussex are not great and I think a GT3 would be worse off in some circumstances. From 50 or 60 in third or fourth it really is very quick and I've started to set the limit function on the board computer to ping at a certain speed in order to stay relatively sensible.
When I got an hour long drive some six months ago in a Maclaren SLR I said that I would never experience such elastic band acceleration again. My second Motorsport Sensation day at Jonathan Palmers Bedford Autodrome convinced me that my love of classic cars would have to be joined by some unashamed modern machinery and a drive in a friends 993 c4 and knowledge of Porsche's reliability and functionality meant it had to be a 911. I thought about a 997S but thought this car had huge bang for it's buck factor. What more can I say, I should have done it earlier but have finally taken the plunge. Just one word of warning about that speed limit warning ping facility. Never EVER tell your other half about it. I made the mistake and now every time I get the 'PING!' on the motorway, I also get a disapproving glance from the passenger seat.
