If you were planning to upgrade your car (993 turbo in my case) and you had to chose between RUF and RS Tuning, which would you choose and why? Upgrade would be to 480-490bhp but really more interested in lots more torque and keeping same reliability/longevity

From my limited experience, more judging by Toby/Martyn's experiences, RS Tuning LOVE big torque.

I doubt there's any difference in the quality of the work, they are both VERY highly respected outfits. RS claim sensible numbers, RUF tend to claim slightly smaller numbers but RUF are known for having "very big horses"

I know that location wise, they're pretty much in the same area of Bavaria so getting the car there isn't an issue.

I would say RUF, simply because adamt was so helpful when I was bugging him about extremely minor (to RUF) options/bits/etc.

As a result if I decided to do something stonking to a Porsche I'd like to take it there.

Wait until Vmax... Derestrictor's 993tt goes up against Martyn's 993tt; both running 530bhp conversions (DeR's is a Weltmeister UK conversion, Mart's is an RS Tuning one). May the best lunabeetle win!!!

RS have a good reputation for their engines and do a lot of racework. I think RS and Ruf prices/power levels are fairly similar. RS is run by a chap who used to work at Ruf afterall.

However the Ruf name is better known and may help value at re-sale. Ruf are also very very customer friendly. One advantage to RS is they have a UK agent, whereas Ruf do not.

Thats me being un-biased as a Ruf Owner.........

Olaf Manthey is also superb.

I visited the workshops last year and it's a great outfit. Good guys doing good things. They're more into GT3s than Turbo 4s though.

I don't know anything about RS tuning, but having visited RUF last year with a number of PHers, there is only one direction my money is going if and when I majorly modify/commision a car.

The man invented The Yellowbird. Nuff said.

Adam/Guy, you are bad people bringing those bloody RUFs to VMAX....

I think Adam is right. A RUF is very special, much more than the sum of all it's parts.

As a buying 'experience', the RUF route is the way to go. Brilliant customer service, etc.

Then you have RS, who are very difficult to deal with - But AFAIK they are the most successful Porsche turbo race engine builder bar none. In the end, this was my basis for going with an RS upgrade - you cannot argue with countless race wins and their experience gained from building these engines. The Edo and Alzen cars are powered by RS engines for example. Reinhold Schmirler (Mr. RS) had alot of involvement with the Yellowbird engine prior to his departure from RUF IIRC too.

Re longevity, RS said my rebuild and upgraded engine would last ~50k miles, although they have some running at 70k miles and still going strong. The RUF engine would probably last longer, since it is less aggressive.

Hope this helps

Martyn.

The RS agent in the UK is Tech 9 in Liverpool. They did the mech work on mine, and the engine only went to RS for the exhaust fitting and the mapping work.

What do u mean last 50K? What would be worn out by then? Would you have to fit the complete upgrade (refurbished) again?

The engine would have a rebuild after 50k miles.

Send me an e-mail and I'll send info regards rebuild costs over if you wish.

Looks like I'll have to pay both a visit in the spring. I understand about the RUF brand etc. Do you think it is necessary to have a bottom end rebuild with the car having covered 45K miles (before) with any of these upgrades (up to 490PS)?
