Boxster Fan Noises!

Hi,
New member and wife is owner of a Boxster!
Recently she has been experiencing noises from engine compartment which I can only describe as 'fan' noises. The only fan I can see is fitted alongside the rear wing air duct. Can anyone tell me what this is and what controls it?
I used to own a Morgan and life seemed so simple!!!!

Hi, it's simply an air INTAKE fan - ie it sucks in outside air and blows it over the engine (and out under the car) when the ambient air temp inside the engine compartment reaches a certain temp (usually when sitting in traffic) and/or the coolant temperature reaches a higher than normal setting. Totally normal ! If it happens all the time, then your temp sensor has fallen off the intake manifold and onto the block, making it read a higher temperature then it actually is. This is for a 996 boxer engine so assume the same for a Boxter engine.. Failing that, could be the front rad fans she heard, again, will only come on in traffic (at high speed) or on all the time (low speed) when the A/C is on ...

Normally these fans are fairly quiet...

So its perfectly normal - unless they're LOUD or rattley or similar...

Is this a new model Boxster? What's the pattern/frequency (i.e. how often, not HZ) of this noise?

Hi guys,
Thanks for the info, the noise appears to have ceased now!!!!
I think it may have had something to do with the a/c being turned on in the middle of winter.Also there is another noise which I think is one of the idler wheels on the pump/alternator belt.

It's defo the AC fan, hey're pretty noisy. It's still a good idea to run it once a month in winter to keep the seals lubed

A/C fans are up front with the radiators aren't they?

Air intake fan also run for a few minutes at startup on our 2.7
