my little lady is getting skittish and i thought i would get the geometry checked. I gather 968s can go off song re this. I know porsche and merc make a great deal about "geometry" - are there major differences between this and the standard tracking/balancing that your local garage or kwikfit does?

more specifically, is geometry somthing that a good Indie can do or does it require specialist kit that only an OPC is likely to have?

tracking / balancing at the local garage is a long way from a full race geometry.
Basics - tracking makes sure the wheels are vaguely pointing in the right way
Geometry would include corner weights, tow in/outs, rake. Takes about 2-4 hours.
Of course it's really useful for track use - because tracks generally are flat surfaces - unlike the pothole ridden british roads.

so an Indie is unlikely to have the kit to do geometry?

in which case, average OPC charge would be...?

(I hate going to OPcs cos they always say theyve found other stuff wrong and charge you through the nose for it. also it probably will be years since any of them have seen a 968 and they'll give it to the teaboy to do anyway).

Note that ive no interest in track work but the car is tramlining lately and the steering has become a little "squirrely" so I'm assuming geometry woudl be wise?

Well there are alot of race teams out there that have got nothing to do at the moment
They would probably do a deal or something - i can't remember how much i paid - but I was there the whole day and did various runs until i was happy with the handling

Re tracking - are you sure it's not tyre wear ?

could be i suppose. they look ok on cursory inspection and are about 14 months old with less than 7k use so I'd hope are still ok.

For a 968 an indie familiar with the 944/968 is probably a better choice; a 968 is too old for most OPC's to be very familiar with it.

Geometry means checking the toe, camber and castor at the front and the rear wheels. Tracking just means checking the toe at the front. Balance is checking the dynamic (spinning) balance of the wheels which has nothing to do with tracking/geometry.

As phelix has said, full geometry includes canber and caster as well as toe in/out on all wheels, significantly more than your average tyre centre will do.

Most good independants , including ourselves, have the necessary equipment to carry out this work.

Hope this helps.
