having read an 'expert' opinion recently that the 996 is not as well constructed
as it's predecessor ,I was wondering if anyone out there has tales to tell of his/her pristine high mileage 996 ... mines a '99 c2 with 45,000 on the clock .. I'm not looking forward to the 48k check!

all things are relative. there are those who argue that the 993 was abnormally overengineered and that the 996 is still very solid compared to the unwashed masses. I would imagine the main issue is not whether your car will last 150k miles but whether its RMS will, and whether you or your service agent will notice in time if it doesnt....

there seem to be a fair few high miler 996s knocking about now, after all some are 6-7 years old now. I havent noticed a massive amount of traffic on PH and other forums about general unreliabilty issues, only RMS, and lets face it, you'd hear it here first!

I do find it amusing when people talk about their high mileage Porsche and then it turns out to have 45,000 miles on the clock.

Now I know it's chalk and cheese but 45k to (say) a diesel Audi is just about "run in" and good for another 155,000 miles !!

yeah .. looks like i reckon 45k is high! .. actually i think that's low mileage too. It's just that i have this romantic notion that i could get another 100k out of her if she's properly looked after, and was hoping to hear from some of you who know of 996's with 100k plus on the clock. I only have mine a few months and i'm still nervously checking for the pool of oil!

There was some guy on here who posted a while back that he had something like 150k+ miles on his 2.5l Boxster.

Did 65K in my '98 996 with no mechanical issues at all.
I guess it's a bit of pot luck as to whether you get an RMS issue or not, bit I'd think it's only a minority of cars suffer with this.

Keep a 996 well maintained and it should last as well as a Diesel Audi ...

I've got 75k showing on mine now (bought at 65k). It's needed a new clutch and flywheel since I bought it (which I knew when I bought it) and NOTHING else.

It's warranteed by Porsche so I'm not at all worried about the RMS failing (plus I think that this is an over exaggerated problem) and it runs like a dream.

How much does the Porsche Warranty cost and can it be applied to any car, or does the car need to bought from a Stealer?

I'm very interested in Swapping my M5 for a 996 in the near future

I've had mu 2000 996 C2 for 4 years, and it's now got 80k on the clock. Still drives and handles superbly, and I have every expectation that it will continue to do so for many miles.

Spotted RMS leak at last service and had this done, along with clutch which was 70% worn, at porsche specialist for about £300. One or two very minor interior squeaks, but generally when people ask about it, they can't believe the age or milage

I commute daily in this car - everytime I've thought about changing to something else, I've been bitterly disappointed - it keeps putting a smile on my face!

It will need a full check over costing approx £200 and then the warranty is 720pa. You will have to pay for any repairs to bring it up to warranty spec before the warranty starts, but it then covers everything. You can renew the warranty (without any more checks) until the car is 9 years old or has 150k on the clock.

Dealers must service it to the OPC schedule, but you can have brakes, clutch etc done by an indy without affecting the main warranty.

I'm not sure if you can have the factory warranty if the car has non OPC service history/holes in the history. Someone else will know though.

There's some diabolical rubbish written on here re 993/996 build quility. You'd think no 993 had never failed and every 996 was just about to. The fact is that they are all incredibly reliable but there are roughly ten times as many 996s floating around.

You can still have the warranty if serviced by a reputable Independent to Porsche intervals and spec.

I know it’s bollox, that’s what the internet does, recycles negative information by a few regular posters until it becomes fact. Never mind its a unbelievable small section of Porsche owners (I’d be surprised if half a percent of the total number 996 owners read this board)

800 is right - you don't need a porsche SH - that's against the law.

cheers

Actually, you'd think the OPCs would be glad that a car with their warranty was serviced by an independent. Much less chance of anything going wrong

98 C4 with 67K on it, been under OPC warranty until Oct 05 and independnet warranty (that DOES cover RMS!) ever since.

Still drives great (especially when driven by rather more talented peddlers than me) and nothing nasty in the history (so far as I and the RAC inspection can tell anyway) - all depends upon how they've been looked after. Plenty out there with fewer miles that look and behave far worse. Condition and history always more important than mileage and number of owners.

As far as I was told by Porsche Reading when I trolled up with my idependantly bought MY2000 GT3 was that following a 111 point check (cost approx £200 + vat), rectification of any defects found, servicing by an OPC and the payment of approx £750+vat I could have a warranty.

I questioned the servicing by an independant and they said definitely no. How could they guarantee the quality standards of someone they have no control over??

Seems a fair point so how can it be "illegal".

It can only be serviced by an Indy in the first two years, using OE parts and working practices.

When the extended warranty comes into play, the importer can stipulate whatever terms he wants to go with his warranty.

The warranty is not part of the new car contract and so falls into the second category.
