Porsche issues 911 recall

Is Porsche's engineering reputation about to take a knock? Stuttgart has issued a worldwide recall for 911 Carrera S and 4S models to have faulty welding in the exhaust system fixed.

Some 18,600 cars are affected, those built between April 2004 and October 2005, according to Porsche. In a worst-case scenario, the defective welding joints can lead to the loss of the tail pipe, although it's being reported in the US that, according to Porsche US subsidiary, only the tips of the exhaust pipe are affected.

The fix takes some 25 minutes to apply, and will, of course, be at zero cost to the customer.

The last recall from Porsche was in December 2004, where 18,150 Cabs needed repair at a cost to the firm of some €10 million.

What reputation they still put the engine behind the car!

Well, at least they are re-calling them, unlike some other motor manufactures who would rather sweep something like this under the rug and hope they're not rumbled (Ford, VAG, Renault).

Hi just a point. My brothers 2004 porche 911 turbo needed a new exhaust because "the baffles" had come loose inside and it rattled like a bag of spanners. They did replace it free of charge tho as it was still under warranty! Still thought my Nissan pulsar was faster to the ton!

Admitted, its not good but at least they are recalling them which is better than most other premium manufacters do.

Think of the fortunate or rather the unfortunate TVR owners. I can just image Head Office saying "Still drivable, theres nothing bloody wrong with those tailpipes, just tell em its heat dissipation"

As a Piston/Petrol head, like all of us, I`d relish the call to visit my local Porsche dealer, have them feed me crisps and tea, offer me test drives and let me sit in the top-of-the-range one going "vroom-vroom" while my car is `adjusted` FOC! I can`t be alone in enjoying the silver lining of a dealership visit when the dark cloud of mechanical malady visits my TVR! Wouldn`t put it past a manfacturer to engineer a minor, non-safety related, recall to get those punters with 18 month old cars into the showroom, where they can pick their next car while they wait!
