944 CV Joint Replacement
Discussion
Whew just finished - what a job.
Was a bit worried about a couple of rounded off 12 point spline bolts so got some prfessional help in - the Stig, a collegue of my brother in law who maintains aero engines for a living.
Rounded bolts came off without too much of a fight, stripped the joints off the shaft and then it all started going wrong. The new joint (a GKN item) would not fit, we tried it on both ends of the shaft but it would not slide on.
We tried gently tapping it with a soft hammer, no luck. We tried hitting it a bit harder, no luck. It was only when we placed the other end of the shaft on a bit of wood and hit it as hard as we could with the biggest hammer we could find that it went on but only by a fraction of a milimeter each time.
It must have taken about half an hour before it was on far enough to get the circlip on the end (which seemed largely redundant). After that it was pretty simple.
I know that this was probably not the ideal way of doing it but short of splashing out on a new shaft it seemd to be the only way.
Old joint was fairly knackered, even showing wear from use in reverse.
Must go for a blast tomorrow now that all is well again!

It certainly was a pain, the damn thing didn't fit. If the other side goes I would seriously think about spending the extra on a whole new shaft and joint assembly. The match between shaft and joint was any worse, it simply would not have gone on and I'm sure that Eurocarparts would not have wanted it back after being hit a few times with a big hammer.
Well done chris, Well you know what to do if you do the other side don't you, for £85 + vat!
Anyway, its always pleasing to do things yourself, which is what I normally do!
Mine is at P,boro (TWG) for a new clutch, water pump, belts and pullies as I ain't lying under the thing any more after doing the brakes and halfshaft.
I'll be doing a report on the garage when I get the car back, so you all know what they can do!!

Why do you think you need a new clutch Chris?
If you do it, let me know, as I've love to come round and see what you have to do on these cars. I've done a normal car clutch but did not fancy doing the porsche.I'd be happy to give you a hand if you need a third person for a lift??
Mine was all sloppy (play in the drive) due to the rubber ring in the plate. I don't know if you know, but if you take the cover off the diff underneath you can put your hand in and, if you can turn it back and forth a 1/4 turn its gone. TWG let me have a look, and turn the shaft to prove the problem.
Keep on touch. Hopefully in the spring there will be a local meet?

Thanks for the offer of a hand gadgit, I'll certainly let you know when when the clutch gets replaced. Spring meets sound like just the ticket.
It has just had a new master and slave cylinder which improved things greatly (from the point of failure to almost fine) but it is still relatively stiff which I have been told (by Barr Tech in Cambridge) is a sign that the clutch is on the way out.
Apparently it is a bit of a b*tch as there isn't an abundance of space, the exhaust pipes get in the way a bit and the bolts/studs holding the waste gate in place have a habit of requiring extreme methods of extraction. Sounds like a perfect time to fit a dual port waste gate!
I'll keep you informed.
