dicky dipstick??

996 C4 1998 - the electronic oil level indicator is showing absolutely full - top bar above the arrow, but the actual dipstick is showing quite low (just above the lower nodule). I trust i should use the dipstick as the true reading?
If i am correct, is this a normal situation or fault etc?
I have topped up with 1/2 a pint just in case
Second question: if the level is correct, is this normal oil usage. I have done about 4k miles in 4 months and i am sure the dipstick showed half full when i started.
