Fcuking camshafts
Discussion
Just done the oil on the car and found out some pieces of broken pinion teeth in the old oil;
So far I have no clue if it could be anything else than pieces of broken teeth from the camshaft(s?) since I haven't had the time to remove the cam cover yet.
(FYI a picture of another car here)
Any thoughts on any other possible cause?

I take it you drive a 944S2, in which case it's most likely from the camshafts as they are well known for shedding teeth once the cam chain stretchs. It makes it worse it you put a new chain on wothout changing the camshafts, has this been done do you know? What sort of mileage has your car done? I had mine done at Hartech at the 96k service, expensive job ( cams alone are £700 )but it was very well done and the car has run like clockwork ever since. Get in touch with Barry or Grant at Hartech and they will help you out.

Another brilliant piece of Porsche engineering.
The problem is caused by lack of oil to the chain, the chain stretches and overloads individual teeth, the teeth wear, then fatigue break off, the others overload and eventually the chain slips, bends all the inlet valves, sometimes destroys the tensioner and occasionally breaks the tensioner lugs off the heads.
You should pre-empt the problem by replacing the chain every 48,000 miles, no matter what anyone else (i.e. Porsche) tell you. Cams are around £500 each from memory, but we usually have used ones available if required.

Hi Marcus,
Yes, I'm quite happy things turned this way out!
Unfortunately I still have no idea where these bits of pinion teeth could come from.
I asked a former OPC mechanic today but he had no idea apart from the camshafts.
What's more, the plans of the engine do not give away anything; a friend thought about the oil pump but since we don't know how it's made inside we can't really tell.
I will keep you informed if we manage to dig something out of it

These pictures were not taken by myself but by a friend.
As far as I can remember what he told me his digital camera is "not very good".
...
Now you talk about it I know what I should have written on my Christmas wish list
edited: the one on my profile was taken by another chap
