Have been watching for 6 months +, reading, watching and now well past the 996 v 993 religious alignment thing (decision 993 for the first). Now looking to make the commitment. Going to make it a little difficult by setting my focus on an ‘S’ – easy on 2 or 4 option.

I thought I had a good feel for price but now I’m active in the market seems the first few cars I have shown interest in have been somewhat above expectations re price.

Would be interested in any opinions on any offer. I would guess market is somewhat slow this time of year due winter period. All those garage queens waiting spring eh…

Had 3 cars in scope in past 2 weeks: 2 from a major Sussex based dealer and 1 private.

Without naming names: What would be groups fair bid be on a 993 60-70k, 97, C2S , good condition, good colour, fsh, manual: I estimated £33-34k from solid dealer and 31-32k private. But, I am seeing ( be asked) prices of +2k to +2.5k on this with little inclination to negotiate. Am I of a few k off re expectations or looking in wrong place. I know condition is all but assumed fair/good in above. Happy to pay the price but I do not want to over pay through over enthusiasm. Any views welcome.

Also assuming a C4S would be +1k to +1.5k more – same spec. True?

I agree with LA - getting someone who knows the cars inside out could save you £££s in the future and make your experience all the more enjoyable. When I bought my 993 back in 1999, it wasn't the cheapest one out there - but a guy who knows them said it was the one. I had it for 5 years and loved it to bits.

I'd try and drive the different variants if I were you.

For me, the "best" one is the straight C2. The wide body looks fab but adds weight and some say doesn't handle as well. The 4wd cars feel a bit different from rwd. Turbo is a different car altogether.

Best of luck

Ajit.

As mentioned earlier your fine on the prices, I forgot to mention you could include a LHD 993TT in your budget

Looks like the N/A S variants are being priced up on rarity and 'future collectability' tips rather than anything inherently superior about the cars. With that budget, you'd get a great condition narrow-bodied car, which IMO are better anyway. If you're going to go for the show, get the go as well (TT).

I've had a 'fair' condition 70k miles 993 and it cost a lot more in maintenance than the two 'good' condition examples - only my humble opinion but get the best condition you can find which may be a 'standard' C2. Unless you're hooked on the turbo body, in which case try to get a turbo!

Vince,
I think you are about right with your values, except I would give the C4S a 10% premium over the C2S.
I recently bought a Zenith C2S to replace my totaled C4S.
I think Autobahn, Coventry had a 70k C2S for £34k, the arrogant salesman refused to do a deal, the sales manager called me 2 weeks later to offer me the car at £30k, but I had already bought my car by then. May be worth a call, they have had the car quite some time.
I agree with others that for less money you can get a top narrow bodied car. You are paying a premium for the S body, as will the person you sell it to in a few years time.
I found the C4S had fabulous brakes and awesome grip but a little numb steering feel compared to the C2S.
Specialist car agents will certainly take out the agro and wasted time. But I quite enjoyed the challenge of finding the best car at the best price.
Get out there now before the prices start creeping back up and and good luck.

I'm sure I've dealt with the same salesman. The sales manager is his younger brother.

The S debate has always caused many interesting arguements over the years and a good left hooker turbo 4 costs the same money but the normally aspirated exhaust note more than makes up for all the performance that I personally will never be good enough to use. The S cars are without doubt the prettiest and whilst the purists say the C2 narrow body is the best driving experience and the T4's are just plain mental, neither of them did it for me.

I have been delighted with my C4S from day one and it was the best example I could obtain from many I looked at. It has saved me from my own dodgy driving while Ringing on several occasions and has performed flawlessly in all other respects and impressed all that have driven it.

I paid the earth and will probably never get it back, but what the hell, money in the bank never made me smile or made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up (which happens every time I open the garage and turn the ignition key). Good value from an entertainment perspective yes, but an investment motor it ain't as a car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it and whilst supply and demand has kept S prices high it is still a 10 year old car which (unlike me) has aged quite gracefully but one day fashions may change and the bottom may fall out of the market.

Litany almost over, but one final thing, I may be preaching to the converted but a pre purchase inspection from the likes of Messrs Morgan/Tognola/Northway is a must EVEN if the car resides at a known dealer.

...a good left hooker...
Not a term to be used in the uSA.

Now I'm intrigued .... well aware of the US vernacular for the oldest profession, but is 'left hooker' some sort of deviant practice of which I am blissfully ignorant ?

cheers, Maurice

There are a few 993s on the PH classified a lot lower than the £34k mark

not sure it's deviant, but hooking from the left is similar to lifting shirts or gardening uphill I believe.

I know of a 993C4S which is in stunning condition (only something like 18,000 miles) that a friend may be selling. It isn't on the market. Exterior is black, if I recall correctly it has a turbo spoiler. If you are serious I can put you in touch - send my a mail with your email address.

Please send me a private mail and I'll pass your details on. This is a v nice car, but I don't want to speculate on someone else's behalf!

Hope you understand.

Truly amazing cars and my advice is to buy one ASAP and start enjoying.
I finally bought a 993 after several early 911's and it is not as edgey as my earlier cars were but as I have moved on in years it now suits my slightly subdued style of driving. As an investment?? Is any car?? If you have spare cash then it is far prettier than a bank statement.
