993 targa tips wanted
Discussion
Hello
I'm after buying a 993
, and in particular am thinking about a targa. Only problem is that I've just found out they're based on the cabriolet which I figure could mean they don't handle as well as the coupe, plus have the potential to suffer from rattles etc.
I was wondering if anyone here has any experience of a 993 targa vs a coupe. Also, if anyone has any buying tips they would be very welcome. From what I've seen to date its not unusual for the clutch to need replacing at the 40/50K mark but other than this they seme fairly indestructable up to 100K when a top end rebuild might be required. Is there anything I should add to this?

993 is pretty indestructible & later models were certainly better built than early 996 cars.targa is a good car (it is a 993 after all) but it is definitely less rigid than the coupe.i have been in one as a passenger & was suprised at some of the creaks & rattles not sure if this was a good example as all models of 993 have the tendancy to rattle around the windscreen.the cars based on cabs as you say are also a little heavier than the coupe, not that this would really spoil the performance as i beleive being '96-98 cars they will have the 285 bhp varioram engine.
For me the 993 targa is a bit of a halfway house,it does not have the classic C pillar of the coupe or the advantage of cabriolet on a sunny day.
It seems to have taken on the mantle of the GT / cruiser of the 993 range.
As an observation considering the number made there appear to be a dispropprtionate number for sale in the classifieds of late compared to the rest of the 993 range. If this is what you want then that is fine as the initial i beleive £6k premium of the targa over the coupe is now practically nothing..Then again this may be telling us something...

The main thing is that the 993 targa was a late 993 model, so most of the problems (wiring loom etc) have been ironed out through gradual evolution.
Main complaint from people I know who've had them is rear vis with the glass roof 'down' - not that good, but hardly tragic compared to an Ultima or white van
