Mate of mine is after a 928 for his wife. Are there any major weaknesses? He`s aiming for an S4, is there an owners forum anywhere???

I had a 928s4 for a couple of years. Fantastic car for the money but make sure he buys a good one. Can cost a fortune if things start to go wrong (£1.5k for an aircon compressor...) Not sure if this site still works but it was very helpful: www.928.org.uk/

Hi,

I was looking at 928 a few years ago and i think the same things still apply.

Buy the newest, lowest mileage car you can afford.
928's are horrendously expensive to "fix" so the best bet is to get a good one in the first place!

928's are full of electric goodies... so make sure everything works. If you can find an unmolested car (no aftermarket stereo, no aftermarket alarm, etc) that's a good start.

If you'd like to check a forum for known issues and so on, try www.rennlist.com - i'm sure there is a 928 forum there.

Hope this helps.

They are brilliant but only if you get a good one. If he has deep pockets my last one is on sale at a garage in Scotland. It is a 1991 S4 Auto with 42k mls. Original owner had it 10 years, kept in a heated garage under a cover and visited the Porsche dealer annually for a service. It is like a two year old car and has no faults or any hidden nasties. Urguably it is the best S4 left in the UK. It does not belong to me any more (did a deal for another car), so I have no agenda. If it is of interest, email me through my profile and I will give you the garage details. I have also owned 2 others in the past and covered about 150k mls between them. I am quite happy to give you any info or advice I can. I think if you search the site you will find a thread a few months ago where a lot was discussed on 928's.

Just watch for the belt changes every 70k miles and they are nigh on indestructible.

Had an S2 and an S4 and despite the minor power defecit the older car felt more urgent.

Many dogs amongst the pedigrees from owners who couldn't afford the Winalot but get a goodie and it will represent the best value performance car anywhere at any price.

I was one of the founders of www.928.org.uk mentioned above and helped write the buying guide you'll find on the site. Buy from an enthusiast, not trade, and check that all the older car-type things have been done, eg shocks/springs, recent steering rack, careful alignment, auto gearbox service. Check all the electrics carefully as they can be a real barsteward to track down. Get to know a specialist - OPCs are not familiar with 928s any more and you don't want to be paying £90 an hour given the extremely low values of the cars.

As we`re in the motor trade, I know he won`t pay full retail money for a car, I also know he definitely won`t travel to Scotland (we`re in Bedford!). He`s found a couple that he likes the sound of, 1 was £2700 with an engine problem but was sold, luckily I reckon!! The other was £4200 which I would guess is average money for one?
So it seems the only major thing to watch out for is the belts need replacing at 70k? Is there anything else to look for? I read on here of a water pump/head gasket problem, is that common?

If its the 200k one, I nearly bought that one that was for sale at £4200, think I could have got it for 3600 but it got sold.
