Dear All,

This is my first post here and for sure I will be needing all the help I can get to sort out all the porsche related question, and hopefully at the same time I can contribute here as well.

I have a 94 993 and it been undergone quite a few mod since the beginning of my ownership. Topend rebuild, chip, convertion from tiptronic to manuel , body kit etc. And now my next mod will be supercharger. I test drove one with the the tpc kit installed and certainly the power delivery is so much stronger. The only issue concerns me is that someone from the rennlist told me that it should not be us on Track. Now what good is it with all that power you cannot make it perform? Can some of you SC owner here share some experience with me if you do attend track events? How reliable is it?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there

I've got a 911SC with a supercharged 993 engine.

The supercharger has been on the car for about 6 weeks so I've yet to track it. However, I've driven fairly enthusiastically on B roads and the like and the temps are not any higher than pre supercharger. Obviously being on a track is a totally different proposition so I can't really comment on what the temps would be like but I hope my other experience helps in the meantime.

Speaking to Robin at 9M he believes the temps should be OK though and it's just a myth that they would increase to dangerous levels on track.

I think Cyberface has been on track with his though - he's on here quite often so will be able to give you the answers you're looking for.

Sorry not much help I know

thanks 993sc. So far two sc owners i know from rennlist tracked the car. and it seems so far nothing has gone wrong. and the car i test drove that owner have the kit installed for more than two years and proved to be reliable as well, at least on the road. i am just trying to gather as much info as possible for those who do attend track day. but thanks 993sc for your feed back.

IIRC the rennlist issue was unnecessary concern about intake temperatures getting too high and resulting in detonation when used on track in high ambient temperatures.

Given that the base TPC kit doesn't include an intercooler, higher intake air temps *do* result in a decrease in power... mine feels much stronger now than it did in the summer because of that nice cold dense air outside. The ECU *should* account for this, and in the UK we're not talking about extreme heat on trackdays. I'd be wary of tracking my car if the ambient air was at 40?C but not with anything I've experienced in the UK.

However the standard SC kit only runs low boost and, according to Robin @ 9m, merely ensures maximum cylinder filling across the entire rev range, since the 330 bhp-ish can be achieved N/A - as standard, the SC doesn't increase maximum cylinder pressures by much, you're just getting maximum volumetric efficiency all the time, and thus a shed load more torque mid range. The 993 N/A engine actually has ram-effect slight overpressure at max revs, the supercharger achieves this all the time. 993SC's car bizarrely puts out much more power than mine, presumably 9m have been optimising their maps with each conversion.

So no, I'd say no trouble on track whatsoever. I'd be more concerned with brake cooling or upgrading to Turbo brakes than the longevity of the engine.

It goes without saying to check the oil system and cooler is working properly beforehand. If you are really worried then get a secondary oil cooler. And if you've got the cash and want to be the first here (and beat me to it) then get the intercooler upgrade for the supercharger

Hello Winsome,

I'm intrigued and fascinated, why did you have the manual/tip conversion?, was it originally a breaker/wright-Off?, what's the story behind it?, How much did it cost?

Let me introduce my car a little, It started out as a innocent tip 993 and after one year of ownership defect started to surface. it started to burn oil so a top end overhaul was done. At the same time the tip box started to have problem also and my mechine tempted me with a very attractive price with a G50/03 5sp box so instead of having the tip box rebuild I went with the manuel convertion. Believe me this is the best mod so far. And total colour change to speed yellow. To sum it up everything is basically changed. now it has pss9 h&r sways etc etc.
And I track the car two three time a year thats the reason why the SC reliability is important...

oh by the way I am located in Hong Kong so temperture do get pretty high. With the intercooler do you think even the little detonation can be avoid...?

Oh I paid usd4000 for the manuel convertion including the 5sp box so I think its a good deal.

If you're in HK then get the full intercooler kit. It's a charge cooler i.e. water-air - can't see you getting detonation due to inlet temps with one of those.

To be honest I haven't heard of anyone really having any trouble with supercharged 993s - if the install is done properly then it appears to be a very reliable conversion.

If you're going the whole hog then you're definitely going to need big brakes

If the chargecooler can resolve all the knock/detonation problem I really wouldn't mind invest a bit more, and yes the machanic already mention the big red.....

Do you know how efficient is the tpc cooler?

Nope, can't afford it yet so trying not to find out too much about it!

I wouldn't worry too much about detonation if you can get the kit set up by a professional who is expert at mapping the ECU. The supercharger kit uses the standard 993 ECU, with an additional injector and separate ECU for on-boost conditions. Control of ignition depending on inlet charge temperature is the ECU's job - if mapped correctly then the car should adjust accordingly in hot or track-work conditions. If the inlet air gets too hot then you will lose power - but the engine should remain safe if mapped correctly.

I think all of the UK PHers with supercharged 993 engines have had the job done by the experts at Ninemeister, who quite rightly have an excellent reputation. You'll have to ensure your mechanic maps the car correctly after the install.

I'd always say the supercharger is an excellent modification to the 993 and makes the car great to drive - however I'd only recommend it if you can be sure that the kit is installed properly.
