I am buying a car which will be track only and am consideinigv 944 in either S2 or Turbo. MO30 or similar essential etc, but the only thing which is concerning me is whether I am always going to find the turbo a bit more of a handful.

I used to have one a 220 t and never got the hang of it on slow corner i.e wait until you are straight before hitting the power and lag meant everything was overtaking you, or try to guess how much lag you were going to get, apply power a bit early and find the rear trying to overtake the front.

I replaced it with a 968 CS which I have to concede I found a bit more straightforward.

So the questions is whether ‘turbo technique’ is something that can be taught and mastered with a bit of practice or whether getting the most out of a 944 t is always going to be a bit out of reach or occasional track idiots like me and a 944 S2 would make a better all round choice

I am planning to allow clients with limited or no track experience to drive it so might I perhaps be better with an S2

Thoughts welcome

Given the choices there is only one - the turbo

Later 250 bhp cars had an LSD which helps (unless it's wet)

I think there was only one coner (at Croft IIRC) that I could not find the right gear. I kept swapping between 1st and 2nd

If you found your 220 a bit of a handful (which i dont realy get to be honest) then maybe keep away from a 250, as a 250 is a bigger hit when on boost- as bigger turbo & the wack is more noticable. My remapped 220 (to 260) was almost N/A in its delivery vs my remapped 250 (312) which did need to be shown quite a bit more respect.

S2 has the N/A ajustability but with a decent driver aboard a 250T thats had the normal remap & wastegate rebuilt & thus at 300bhp level will be nearly 100bhp & over 100lb/ft up on an S2, so on an open track is a much much quicker proposition.

If its to be used for novices to drive then s2 no question, other than throwing into the equasion that maybe a Lux maybe an even better idea, yes slower but bits are way cheaper & novices less likely to get them selfs in grief.

Buy the turbo, tame it, drive it like you stole it, and you wont stop smiling.

Hmmm,

the 220t was only a handful out of slow corners e.g. chicane at Snett, but probably more down to technique than anything, though I wonder if the LSD will help.

Igauna if yours felt like an NA it was quite differnt to mine, which was very much on / off.(270 bhp at amd) with a ton of torque which just landed in your lap all at once. Really lovely car, but when it bit, it bit

I think I'm going to go turbo - Does anyone kwow if the turbo can be turned down - I may on occasion have complete novices in the car and would like to be able to at least give them a chance

Hi iguana, so did a re-map on your standard 220 give you 260 (40 bhp)? i have a modified 250, thinking of a re-map!

You could im sure turn the boost down, however seems quite pointless to me, if you are going to suffer the turbos flaws, then at least the power available makes up for it, to have one slower than an S2 & with far inferior engine characteristics kinda looses the plot for me.

Diesel- not mega gains from my 220, but then it was a 200k miles engine with no docs relating to an engine build, so not too bad considering & not sure whos chip it was.

The 250 was promax chip & rebuilt wastegate, but a lots of playing around with fueling on the RR after instilation as it only gave 270/280 or so with chip alone, 312bhp/360Lbft (@AmD)after
