Angry non-Porsche owners
Discussion
I'm new to this Porsche ownership thing, so an experience yesterday left me feeling a bit uneasy.
I was steaming down my local dual carriageway at what I'll describe as 'a fast pace'. There wasn't much traffic, and I overtook a few cars but I definitely wasn't driving at a dangerous speed or weaving in and out lanes, or cutting anybody up or anything like that. I was going fast because I had been held up earlier and was in danger of being late to collect my 7 year old son from football training.
Anyway, a mile or so later I arrived at a roundabout where there was a bit of a hold up and some guy in an Espace sped past in the inside line, cut in front of me, jammed his brakes on, and gave me the w*nker sign. He was undoubtedly one of the cars I had overtaken earlier and was now a very unhappy camper indeed.
As I wasn't driving any differently to how I often drive in my Volvo estate, and this has never happened to me before, I can only put his reaction down to some form of Porsche envy.
A mate of mine bought a sporty Mercedes convertible and said that it was a nightmare because people regularly gave him the w*nker sign when he had the roof down, and that people wouldn't let him out at T junctions if he was in the Merc.
So, I was wondering if this sort of antagonistic aggressive response is something that Porsche owners regularly encounter? Was I just unlucky? Or was it just someone who knows me for the w*nker I happen to be?

must say my experiences have generally been either neutral or positive, perhaps because a 968 is not a common car so people dont know its a porsche. however last week i was in the outside lane of a 2 lane melding into one, a bloody great van overtook me on the inside and forced me into the middle of the narrowing road and into oncoming traffic. I was faily angry but calmed/consoled myself with the knowledge that he was a W**ker in a dirty van whilst i was in a great sports car
I didn't have a problem getting let out of a nasty side road on to a queuing dual-carriageway today. I thought I would, but a silver Focus driver was very courteous indeed. I think I've only had pleasant comments, nothing snide or nasty.
There was an orange Focus who wanted to race me on the M4 on Sunday. I let him past, which always confuses them

To some degree yes. Have recently changed from a silver 993 to a gurads red 993 and have noticed over the weekend other drivers are far more agressive to me in the new car probably because silver isn't such an 'in yer face' colour. Polar opposite reaction from pedestrians who gave it the thumbs up when I was stuck in traffic on Saturday afternoon.
Hey ho, just a cross I'll have to bear

Ah poor people.. They really should know their place in society. Next time it happens just get the butler to give the reprobate a bally good thrashing.
The way I see it, you've just had the good fortune for one of lifes under achievers to introduce himself. Just remember, you have a Porsche and he doesn't

Welcome to Porsche ownership. It's quite normal and I know other posters can regale you with similar stories. Ge used to it, don't let it spoil your day and enjoy your fine automobile.

I agree, welcome - it happens all the time so try not to worry about it. I keep a baseball bat and ball in the car incase it gets out of hand and I must say now I drive very agressively and will think nothing of running someone of the road if they do it to me ;-) only joking! People do get jelous but stangely enough it was worse in my boxster than in the turbo? TO LIVE IN FEAR IS NOT TO LIVE AT ALL - YOU DESERVE IT, ENJOY IT AND FORGET OTHER PEOPLE!
Yeah sadly it is true. I have 2 cars, with an identical driving style in each. Though they have a big gap in capability I am now comparing like with like. I’ve probably had 2 or 3 comments in my daily car in 17 years of driving.
However the addition of a Porsche solicits “advice” from people once every 1000 miles or so. They have on occasion undertaken me to share their “wisdom”, braked hard, even driven on the hard shoulder to undertake me despite me being in the outside (slow) lane, flashed hazards on, gestured, blah blah blah. Always men, never women, and always oblivious to their danger & hypocrisy. They are often breaking the speed limit themselves + the swerving on top. So why is my interpretation of safe speed so much less valid than theirs, or is it that theirs is somehow more acceptable ?
Personally I do use speed and when I overtake and the ferocity of that in a 996TT is, I think, what pi$$es other drivers off. I hazard that I have also hurt their sensitive pride and an opportunity to recover it with some self righteous and hypocritical “return” is irresistible to the fools

As with other posters - I was AMAZED at the difference when I changed from my Lapis Blue BoxS to my bright red one...considering it was already bad enough with the blue car!
I'm afraid Porsche-Envy is just something you will have to get used to. Even if you drive like a saint you will still encounter people deliberately being

Sorry. That's the way it is.
Careful where you park it. Run a shopping car for going places where you'd rather not take it.
Very sad. But its the conclusion I've come to after six years of sports car ownership.

Not had any problems with Porsche ownership. - Although there is opc down the road from me, so seeing Pork is not uncommon here.
I find with the tt that most other drivers know it more of a performance car then theirs and have found that making reasonably rapid progress but not aggressive they often let you by/ give more room.
Some dont but they dont look in their mirrors anyway. Enjoy your car, set a good example of driving and it does get repaid.

Don said:1. There is no doubt that any nice car in a loud colour (red or yellow) attracts much more attention. The scum think that not only have you got a nice car but that you are also saying to them "Hey, look at me". I only choose subtle colours for this reason.

2. There is a marked difference area, by area. In affluent areas nobody bats an eyelid, in others you feel like you're waiting for the attack.
3. I have always run a 'shopping car' too. There are too many places where you are just asking for trouble if you leave your car there. This necessary extra car is one of the hidden costs of prestige car ownership.
Can't say that I have ever experienced any problems like this, but my 911 is the traditional low key arctic silver, and because of my live/work situation, I rarely use the car during the week. I'd just chill out if I were you, and bask in the knowledge that your car is faster than, what, 90% of what is on the roads anyway.
Personally I am also less inclined to want to take anyone on in a road duel since I learned just how little I know about driving fast at a recent trackday. That reminds me, must book some tuition . . .

I've had about half a dozen bmws and a boxster for one year (back to bmw at the moment) - only ever got a nice response in the boxster..let out at junctions, middle lane hoggers would move over & all sorts. BMW is a totally different matter - no bugger will let you in/out nor move lanes (when other lanes are empty).
It is totally mad, I dont assume someone is a tosser or bad driver just of what make their car is......
I can't wait to (hopefully) get a 911 one day in the future - sod the rest, enjoy!

If I got grief it normally came from mid-range Mercs and BMW drivers trying to "race"
As everyonelse has said, enjoy the car and ignore the jealous narrow minded muppets

Sadly fella,
I too experience it regularly, having had my 996 (Silver)about a year it's something i've come to almost expect. my wife says that it's the whole 'Porsche thing', apparently its an perceived arrogance that winds other drivers up; particularly men. So i've tried to chill out about the whole thing, understanding that there's little i can do about the insecurity of others.
And the 'shopping trolley' as i call it, is a must! Otherwise the Porsche will be vandalised/keyed, and particularly 'doored'.
