My oil pressure gauge reads as I'd expect for shorter journeys , as in it stays at 5 bars for the first 5-10 mins and then , while idling , drops to 1-2 bars , however once the revs increase to 3000 + the pressure sits at 5 bars again . This is probably normal , but what is a little worrying for me is that on longer journeys the gauge (after say 90 mins) will not read above 2-3 bars.
Apologies for the long winded explanation .. Is this all normal??

Doesn't sound normal - once the oil is fully warmed up, say after 15 minutes, the pressures should stabilise. As you say 1-2 bar idling, and 4-5 bar when at mid-range revs (3,000 plus). At lower revs and low throttle openings you might see 3-4 bar, but not much less unless idling.

Worth getting checked I'd say - may just be a faulty sender of course.

Thanks Stephan,
Everything you say there is exactly what happens in my car , except this drop to 2 ish bar after about 90 mins and its refusal to increase ( it does drop to 1-2 bars as per usual at idle tho)... Has anyone else experienced this .. ??

.. as per previous poster. Your readings are not normal. Readings are variable depending on weight of the oil, condition of the oil & filter and of course OIL temperature (not water temperature - just because water temperature is 'normal' doesn't necessarily mean oil is at 'normal'). A 0w or even 5w oil should get to efficient working temperature very quickly in Winter temperature - from memory, mine starts dropping from 5bar after 1-2 minutes at idle.

Cold idle: 5 bar
Fully warm idle: 1.5 - 2 bar
Any engine speed above 3000: 4 bar+

I hope this helps.

Richard.

Agreed. But I think I get a bit higher pressure on idle (2.5 ish)

I agree about getting it checked. It could be an oil pressure relief valve problem, or it could just be a faulty sensor. The sensors normally fail to a static value which, if I have read correctly, is what you are experiencing.

Have had the same problem with my 996 (30.000 miles facelift 996) - thought it was the sensor but got a call from the OPC saying that it was leaking oil from the transmission and RMS so it is still waiting for a new tiptronic gearbox from Stuttgart. Not great - so get it checked and hopefully you have the extended warranty!

I have the warranty , I've just had the 48k check done , I mentioned the anomaly to Porsche but they didn't think it all that important , and it's not getting stuck as it still drops to 1-2 bar while idling ..
Am I right in saying that there's a back up system where I'll get a red annunciator at any rate , if the oil pressure is insufficient? I'm beginning to suspect the sender as they do give trouble , but it's puzzling that this always happens at just about the same time on long drives .. On shorter runs it behaves flawlessly.

If you have the Porsche Warranty then why worry - ask them to find the fault and replace the sender ?! The DME will tell them if you have any low pressure oil warnings so you can eliminate that for peace of mind. 'not to worry about it' - seems a very sloppy attitude - was that from an OPC ?

Just got my 996 back this morning. Impeccable service from OPC. New tiptronic gearbox and RMS fixed at no costs and no fuss (extended warranty). Oilgauge shows exactly what fulham911 describes so that has been fixed as well. Cannot urge you all enough to get the extended warranty. At £750,- it seems good value for piece of mind. So Ballcock instead of experimenting around go to the OPC and get it looked after.

Not experimenting , meerly not worried .. Most of my journeys are less than an hour and the pressure gauge behaves impeccably for this duration .. and if it all goes horribly wrong?? Well this lazy ass will then ring Porsche quoting his warranty no. The reason I posted this thread was a vague degree of technical curiosity ..
