A good friend of mine..had the above fitted yesterday.....wow.

The car feels smoother but at 4500 rpm the shove is distinctly stronger. It's an amazing piece of kit and the installation was total painless too - anyone else done it?

Grey area...he was told that if the insurance men could detact it, they'd be in the chipping business not isurance!

Interestingly, they are doing around 4 997s a day at the moment too - certainly popular. I had a 'mildly altered' (355 bhp on rolling road) 996 targa a couple of years ago and at no point did the OPC make any noise when it was in for work.

If your mate has a serious accident where someone gets hurt, belive me the insurance co has the resources via 3rd parties to check every part of the car, even if the accident 'was not his fault'. This includes the ECU and other engine, brake and suspension components. Wouldn't like to be in a 'no payout' scenario if something nasty happens.

Fair points - DMS can put the original settings back if they are next to the car with a PC BUT I agree - it's a hassle.

Bottom line is that, if he's not informed his insurer, he's not insured - full stop!

Yep, not grey area at all. He's not insured or warrantied. Personally, I'd tell the insurers.

No connection at all - just impressed with them.

I should mention that matey has informed his insurance Co and (RSA) and they commented that it was very honest and there would be no additional premium - so he's insured...which is nice.

I had some warranty work done on my BMW 330d - it was DMS'd. The work involved the air mass meter, ie; directly involved with the engine management. They didn't have a clue as to the modification, even though they had it plugged into the diagnostics computer ...... The dealer downloaded their standard prog. for the mapping when they installed the new component , but DMS re-loaded the upgrade for free .... BTW, No connection, just a satisfied customer...

Jim, what did you think of the mods to your 996 - was there a noticable difference, ie; is it worthwhile?

Mildly altered? In what way, I assume you mean a little bit more than a chip. Exhaust/manifold/airbox?

tell insurance, don't tell an OPC as they won't "see" the chip

let's face it, all they do is read the computer, fill it with new oil and occasionally tighten a few wheel bolts (or not)

Agree with the last post totally - thats what I did - had the chip fitted today to mine....jesus what a car.

The targa I had was chipped to 355bhp and had a sports exhaust - great car and lost only £7000 in 2 years which was a nice change to a certai car with a bull on the front....

is the difference noticable on the road or does it just feel faster - interested as I have 996 3.6 C2 with PSE

presumably its midrange overtaking power that it gets?

Yep - spot on. The mid range (from around 4000 rpm from memory) was much beefier. It cost around £500 from memory and was worth every penny.

The dealers cannot see what date it was re-flashed, as the ECU's doesn't use a caledar/clock.

They can see that it has been re-flashed though and they can see how many times its been flashed. Factory units will only ever have 1 in the flash counter. Dealers, when doing work on the car, will only ever reset the ECU, forcing it to re-learn its correction values. This isn't a re-flash and it will just wipe the volatile memory.

As advised, I would be very careful about not telling your insurance co as most of the loss adjusters have ECU readers now.

As for making a warranty claim, I would come clean and tell them. In both this and the insurance instance, not telling them would be fraud and you could find yourself uninsurable as a result. As tuning has become more sophisticated, so have manufacturer techniques in limiting their claims liability.

I understand about the insurance, but why tell the dealer? WHY give them another reason to payout on nothing?
