I have used my 997S through 2 winters and 10,000 miles and never once felt the need for 4wd. I just don't see the point of a 4wd Porsche in the UK and especially if you ever want to put your car on track where a 4wd just gets in the way.
Why buy a sports car and then sully it with 4wd?

I have had a 997 S Coupe, a 997 S cabriolet and now currently drive a 997 4S Coupe.
The 4S dosent feel as "chuckable" as the 2 wheel drive versions and it does feel slightly heavier to drive, however as an all season car that can be driven every day it is unbeatable. The 4S dosent have any extra noticeable understeer, the steering is somewhat more weighty though(arguably a benefit because extra weight at front helps even out weight distribution)and for some reason i find the 4S clutch to be lighter.
A lot of posters seem to advise against the 4WD but the wider hips really look awesome and the extra traction in slippery conditions is really noticeable when pulling out of junctions quick and of course the 4 has the "Electronic Brake Prefill" and "All Wheel Brake Assist" which are extra benefits not found on the 2WD version.
However, if you live somewhere where rain and slippery conditions are very rare then, unless you really want that butt, you probably are better off with the 2WD versions.
But I personally think the extra £4040 for the 4WD, Wider Butt and better brakes is worth it but a sports car purist would say not. Put it this way if ideally your ultimate car is the 997 GT3 then get the 2S whereas if it's the turbo get the 4S.
There is no other car to compare it with. What other car gives this rich heritage, 4 wheel drive, rear usable seats(children that is) and this amazing performance.
