porsche911 { 996} head lights/advice

morning all, on the 911 {996} whats the difference in the cars that have orange reflector on the front back lights and some are plane front/back.Is is purely cosmetic? or is there a significant difference in the car i should know, i am looking to buy one 1998 onwards-but no more than 25k any other advice appreciated. thanks -- also average service costs??
Facelift model was from MY01 onwards & had completely different (fried egg) headlights. These certainly are not retro-fittable to earlier cars (unless you also change the wings, bumper etc.
If you can find a MY99 in your budget it will have the clear lights already on it, saving you the effort & £850 worth of new headlights/rear lights.
Plus I think there were some other minor improvements on the MY99 cars onwards.

The cost to have it fitted depends.
You can go get it done at an Official Porsche Centre & it will cost around £1500 fitted (can vary from place to place) This will be the the complete system plumbed into the ECU that opens & closes the valves at certain revs. You also get a button on the dash to turn it on/off. They will need the car for a whole day as the fitting takes several hours (so they say)
Or you can buy the parts from an OPC then get it fitted by a specialist with the valves fixed open which saves several hours in fitting and is therefore a lot cheaper, but exhaust is always loud & no button to turn it off/on. A good specialist will fit the exhaust in a couple of hours.
The other option is to source the exhaust from a breakers. A couple of years ago I found a system that had been on a car that the breakers were offering for £350 and a specialist would have fitted for a couple hours labour. So guess thats the cheapest way of doing it, unless you go for another make of exhaust (Fabspeed etc) but don't have much experience of those. I also found a brand new system for £850. They are around but you have to have loads of patience as they get snapped up very quickly.
