Is a cheap classic 911 viable?

A friend has a hankering for a classic 911 probably a 3.0 SC or earlier.
We have both seen some advertised around £8000 and below.
Has anyone any previous experience from buying a 911 in this price range and can offer any tips?
We are both reasonably handy with the spanners and currently do our own maintenance and help each other out (which has included head gasket changes, suspension strips etc, so not just basic stuff).
Is this a means to cheap 911 thrills or a road to financial ruin?

I've had one three years now, and they are pretty bullet proof.
There are a few on here, check the fleet option in members,
servicing need keeping on top of,
I do my own oil and sometimes plugs if I feel up to it, otherwise
an hour at a specialist/contortionist
bits will have worked loose and need replacing from time to time
my door lock failed for some reason and had to go in for sorting

The old saying of buy the best you can afford is the key. If (like me) you can do your own maintenance then you know you going to save at least £50+ VAT /hour that a independent would charge. There are plenty of books (101 projects for your 911) comes to mind to assist with the tech details.
If your not 100% clued up on 911's then an inspection by a good specialist should help you stay away from any cars with expensive problems that even a good "home mechanic" would not know about.
Once you've done all your home work then Lady luck still play's a part as a good car can still knacker its gearbox the week after you bought it, so keep some money back for the unexpected !
