1998 996. Porsche OEM enhanced sound pack. 6 channel amp and speaker package.

No output from any speaker. Head unit swapped out with another and is OK so problem with the amp or possibly a shorted speaker. Amp is a Nokia 6x40W. Fuses checked in panel by drivers footwell and that's all OK. If there's another in line fuse for the amp please advise if you know where that might be.

Can anybody advise how I can get to the connector for the speakers and if possible which wire is for which speaker so that I can test whether a speaker has shorted.

Thanks in advance

Barry

Sounds like a dodgy amp to me mate.

I'll see if can find the wiring diagrams anywhere but unless we get another 996 in I might not be able to get the info soon.

Thanks, won't need a lot of persuading to replace the amp. Probably so the speakers at the same time. anybody done a reasonably priced upgrade?

Barry,

Like you thought the sound system in my 996 was Pi** poor, especially as it's a cab...yes, yes i know 'bronskie beat' on the stereo, etc.

The way i upgraded was to keep the head unit as is; it's all part of the PCM/Phone etc.
There is however an input to a small amp, so i bought a 4 way pheonix gold amp off ebay £150 vice £1000! (barley 'run in'!), bought a good set of 3 way component DLS 5 1/4' speakers for the front /dash (£500 no mod's needed). Although to be fair if you don't mind 'cutting and pasting the 6'' size is apparently even better. I had this professionally fitted by by prestige audio (Rickmansworth) who pestered me to have a sub fitted in the passenger footwell (won't fit anywhere else!), i resisted as i didn't want to loose any legroom.
The sound was transformed, much better clear and crisp with little/no distortion at the top end. However, i did feel that it lacked base and depth, I then managed to find a small 6'' sub custom built for a boxter/996 footwell (sidewall mounted, remarkably unobtrousive). Bought anothe amp 2 nd hand and toddled back to prestige for fitting.
And boy oh boy the difference was amazing, the soung is now 'the dog's boll*&ks'. Not clash, clash, boom ,boom, boom, AKA chav in Astra!, but deep, rich and precise..and virtually limitless..
So to sum up:
The amp is everything!! my advice buy quality second hand!!
Even a small sub gives noticable depth ans richness.
Quality (£250+) 3 way speakers for the front.
rears aren't as important (although to be fair i've decided to upgrade mine to give a bit more balance).
Regards,
Deano

Hi Dean,
Thanks for the kind words! Glad you are still happy with the install!

I thought it was Erasure in your CD changer when it was in the workshop?!!!!

Cheers

Barry,

Yes the amp's go in the front boot (ha ha!), you can still get to the spare wheel, and carry a weekend bag.

Chris,

So that's where it came from!

Would you like it back?
