Chaps

Having read most of what's on this esteemed forum re 996s, I'm looking into a used 996 GT3 Mark 2. Need some help working out the must have options as follows:-

I want a 'comfort' version car, but do I need the PCCB brakes and bucket seats? PCCB gets lots of bad press - but is it worth it from a future resale/collectability perspective? Re buckets - again, is it worth getting these on day 1 or not - they can be sourced at a later date if needed.

In terms of usage - the car will be used mostly on the road with the odd track day trip (inc a 'must do' trip to the 'Ring no doubt!!!!!).

Are there any other 'must have' options I should consider?

Thanks in advance for any input!

Re the seats: I have the Recaros which are brilliant in terms of position, support, etc. However, they are not quite as easy to get in/out and I find the regular seats remarkably more comfortable especially after a stint in the Recaros.

If you need the back space, you may want to get one of each... regular seat for the passenger side which can easily flip forward for access (plus your passenger may prefer you for the easier ingress/egress), and a Recaro for the driver to provide the additional support whilst driving.

If buying 2nd hand, look for one with the Recaros... buying them later is more expensive than buying comfort seats...

If you just do the odd track day, PCCB will be fine.

Buckets are great, and apart from that you can't really go wrong, though some people like the console delete option.

So it seems like

- PCCB = bad for lots of track days, but ok if lighter use. How much does it cost to replace PCCB pads/disks when they fail?
- Buckets = great on track, but not a 'must have' on road. How easy is it to swap seats in/out of the car? Is it a job I could do in my garage?

As a next question - is there a difference between the tyres on a GT3 Mark 2 and those on a GT3 RS? If so, what's the difference?

Thanks all
S.

SAMBAMAN - re your Mark 1 - looks very nice - but I'm after a Mark 2 I'm afraid.

RE Tyres.

The MK2 came with Michelin Pilot Sports which is a high performance road tyre, the RS came with Pirelli Corsa Systems which are a more track orientated tyre.

What about the roll cage? Most cars have it (at least the rear part if not the full thing), but some don't. If I get a car without the cage, can I fit one later? Does the cage make a significant difference to the handling?

I would say that the buckets are an absolute must. To my mind, it suits the GT3 and one with the comfort seats wouldnt appeal to me.

Roll cage - you can get it retro fitted. I had a porsche tequipment one fitted which takes the race harnesses.

Most will have aircon - i'd avoid one without.

Personal taste but i'd also like no centre console.

Good luck!

Shut yer face Tims.... Do you want your car value to bomb or to be a high priced classic????

Keith - add another £10k - it's the only one for sale in the UK (probably)....

And Subirg.... get a Clubsport - you know it makes sense....

In fact, get a Mk1 Clubsport.... oh , sorry, there are none for sale cos they are so RARE...

Seriously, if you are going for just the occasional trackday then forget rollcages, recaro's etc and get the car set up for fast road and get the cabin set up for fast comfort. Why waste money compromising what you are going to be doing 90% of the year - road driving????

why would you buy a Comfort and then consider adding bucket seats and a roll cage ?

The prices of a Comfort and a Clubsport are still comparable, but I think that is despite Clubsports typically having led a tougher life. But look at the 993. I believe the Clubsport RS is significantly more valuable today than a standard RS. I would expect the Clubsport GT3 to hold its value better in future years than Comfort versions. At least that is what seems to have happened in the 964 and 993 range and even the 2.7 RS

Not sure about that one. 993 Clubsports are worth more than Comfort spec cars but only by a few grand.

The clubsport and comfort models in the 996 range (mk2 at least) seem relatively interchangeable... comfort can be specced with cage and recaros, no lightweight flywheel in either etc.

PCCB are £2500 a corner to replace.

I wouldn't go for a comfort spec it can be a nightmare to resell, (although personaly I dont know why I prefer it).

Holy COW! PCCB at £2,500 a corner to replace is not a bargain! Can PCCB cars have the system replaced with steel brakes if required?

From my research - at present 996 GT3 CS cars are less valuable than Comfort cars, but I accept the point that this might change in the future - especially given that there are more comfort cars out there than CS cars.

Contrary to popular belief, I have a tiny suspicion that comfort spec Mk1 GT3s may actually become more desirable in the future... Imagine the sales pitch in 10/15 years time... "It's the original GT3 with all the necessary comforts of the 997/998/999GT3... A piece of history with an undiluted driving experience without compromising the driver"...

you can replace with steel brakes, but the PCCB have 80 odd thousand miles life span, so OPC nottingham tell me, so I think keeping them will hold value.
