"Whilst it is a lovely car we 997 owners have nothing to fear from this smaller, noisier young upstart. It was a fantastic ride and it may have more luggage space, but its no 911. We may continue to look down our noses at these young "wanaabes"

Personally I do not look down at them at all but sometimes feel they think I do. Same for any other car for that matter too. If you like cars then that's the qualifier. Besides which the cars you mention are excellent and merit appreciation in their own right as do many others.
A bloke in a white 944 S2 the other month pulled along side me, blue running lights, after market spoiler, sports exhaust etc. He’s a different person from me but was enthusiastic and interested. I simply don’t understand snobbery about cars, or houses, educations etc for that matter. I have a second car shopping trolley and when I drive past a Bentley I don’t feel the weight of their oppression because it’s not in my head or heart in the first place.

Don't want a 911, can't justify the cost (at this stage in my life).
I wanted new.
I had £50k max.
I chose Porsche.
... and I think I did quite well. And I'm very happy with that.
Had I wished to throw another 20k in, I could have had a 911, but I'm spending that on an extension to the house.
Sounds reasonable to me.. and to any other sane person.
There will always be those who have a faster car, a slower car, a bigger house, smaller house, bird with bigger blowers, bird with smaller blowers, bigger salary, smaller salary, bigger knob, smaller knob, better camera, sh*ttier camera, etc...
Whats the point in me comparing myself to the bloke next to me at the lights in a Lambo? I don't. He might be up to his eyeballs in debt, have lung cancer and the smallest knob in the world. I don't know. He's got a better / faster car than me. So what?
If I want to be competitive I'll take up racing in a small series, but right now, I'm going to look at my car and figure out just how I can fix the neons underneath! BO SELECTOR!!!!

I started a thread on this once. I drive a Boxster and give a friendly gesture to all other Pork owners (except Cayenne's) but it's only ever the 944/968 brigade who seem to wave/flash back. I think the good looking spikey haired guy I pass most mornings in his 997S is rather embarassed by my antics.....which just make's me do it all the more.
I think in general, Porsche owners are too aloof to give a friendly gesture, it's just the minority enthusiasts who give a cheery wave....hey ho.

So what some 911 owners might think about you would stop you buying arguably the best handling/mid engined coupe on the roads today?

No way do I look down my nose at Boxster, Cayman S, Cayenne just because Ive got a 911.
When will people understand that the 3 are different cars and cannot be compared directly? Sure, you can compare like for like. When I had a Boxster, I always felt I had the superior car when I saw a Z4, SLK or 350Z, like I do when Im in my 997 and see an SL, 4200 or XK Jaguar.
If I wanted a 2 seater well sorted roadster, Id get a Box, but I want a 2+2 Porsche, so I buy a 911.
Lets be honest, a Cayman S reasonsbly specced to say £51-52K would buy most 996s, a very good 996 C4s and even a 996 tt (albeit a very early one)! Cant be snobbish with Cayman drivers really!

That could be an embarrasing mistake. An average driver would be quicker in a Cayman.

Rubbish. Its the sheer volume of cars. Round my way you'd be waving every five minutes: and sometimes I DO because, yes, I'm an enthusiast. Drive around the Highlands of Scotland or around Anglesey in North Wales - when you see another Porsche of course you wave. Everyone does! Because you'll be lucky to see one in the entire two week holiday...

Agreed - but even so, there's got to be a load of Pork owners that are too aloof to wave/flash. I came across loads of them in the hospitality tents at Le Mans last year. Anyway, it's not really a big deal now is it?
