Roads around Hertfordshire

I am a bit bored of my normal early Sunday morning race track, ahem I mean route. Anyone know of any decent roads around Hertfordshire that would be worth a thrash on a Sunday morning?

Ah, a local PHer

There’s a good run out of SA on the A5 north to Dunstable – mind the cameras on the way into the town. Take a left in the town centre (B489) and up onto the top of the Downs (B4541). Head down the other side to Whipsnade and turn right on the B4540. Stay on this road until you get to the B489 again and turn left signed to Tring. At the next big junction, take a left onto the A4146 Hemel Road (becomes the Dagnall Road and then Leighton Buzzard Road) into North Hemel (cameras here too) Then it’s the A4147 back to SA.

Ah yes, local to where I grew up in WGC.

When building my Westfield, a regular test route was from Digswell to Hertford on the B1000 (Bee-tharsand). If you get to Hertford (Sele Farm), you can either keep going and follow signs to Stevenage via Waterford & Stapleford (the A119 I think). Alternatively, go through Hertford on the ring-road and hang a left up the hill to County Hall, then through the lanes to Essendon and onto Potters Bar via Cum-Cum Hill/Cucumber Lane.

Moved away from the area a few years ago, and am sure there's now a handful of cameras through Hertford. I do know that Waterford and Stapleford always have coppers with a speed trap (and thats prob not as good a route as the one to Potters Bizarre anyway).

There are dozens of testing routes from WGC through lanes to Walkern and the Hadhams on way to Stansted, but some are damn tight for 2 cars...high risk of curbed alloys with "Mums on the 'run" with 4x4 uber-wagens.

I often go out on a Sunday in Herts in either the Porsche (911 3.2) or Caterham (7 HPC).

Start Codicote down to Welwyn
B1000 Digswell to Hertford
A414 Hertford to Hatfield (thru tunnel especially if I'm in the 7) then A414 to St Albans
B651 St Albans to Wheathampstead
B653 Wheathampstead to Hatfield 9past crooked chimney)
B197 next to motorway past Red Lion pub down to Welwyn and back to Codicote

Other route is when you get to A414 to St Albans head for A405 J21a M25
A405 past J21a towards Watford down to M25 J19
M25 J19 then off J18 on A404 towards Denham
A412 down towards Slough

Good sighted roads - some of them single track but with good tarmac, tight and twisty as well as fast and flowing corners.

Yep, second the route that SURJ has suggested, have ridden the road a few times on the bike. Finchingfield is a nice place to stop for a pint or a coffee.

The other road I like is the A507 Buntingford road from Baldock, got a nice mixture of high speed wide well sighted single lane roads with loads of safe overtaking opps, and some nice tight lane driving,with the added bonus of no speed cameras or scamera vans (so far anyway)

Some friends and I used to go do nice runs up into the Cotswolds - meet up at the Hellfire Caves in West Wycombe, then head out towards Oxford on the A40, down Stokenchurch Hill (which is far more fun on the way up, but watch out for wet leaves in Autumn or you may be off for a spot off impromptu badger chasing!).

I can't remember the specific roads (will ask my route planning friend) but we used to go and eat in Chipping Norton after driving down one of the most rapidly undulating roads I have ever driven!! Very nearly had 'big air' in my M3!!
