Holed Rad

Got home this evening and the coolant level warning light on the 996 was flashing for the last few miles. Nothing unusual as it's done it before. However I noticed that the centre rad had a mini vesuvius of water and on closer inspection it's been hit by a stone on the cooling fins and created a leak. Checked Eurocarparts and the centre rad is available at £103 + VAT, which seems reasonable. The make is BHER. Is this the OEM manufacturer as I'm sure if I order one from OPC it'll be at least double the price and I'm not paying an extra £100+ for a box with Porsche written on it.

Behr are a large manufacturer of radiators supplying some of the major car manufacturers. It's possible that they also supply Porsche. I'm not sure if Bher is a typo or a different company.

Thanks Green. I think it is a spelling mistake and, unusually for me, not my fault. That's the way it's spelt on the Eurocarparts website.

Just checked the Behr website and they don't seem to be a tinpot organisation. German as well and although not mentioning any car brands they speak alot about supplying OEM. I'm pretty comfortable with buying one but will call the local OPC tomorrow to get their price.

Well, lo & behold, OPC price is only £5 more so guess where I'm getting it. Mind you that coolant is expensive and 22 litresworks out more than the cost of the rad.

Very helpful young man at OPC Tonbridge checked that they did a larger container than 1 litre and they do sell a 20 litre container at a significant reduction

Now just the cost of my local indy doing the job.

also - you only lose about 4 litres if you do it carefully.

Thank you ragtop. You obviously didn't notice my comment about the "little vesuvius" which by now has deposited the vast majority of the coolant on my garage floor.

Whatever of the 20 litre container doesn't get used will be fine for the coolant replacement in 2008.
