The GT2 comes with a warranty from JCT600, which has 18 mnths to run. I was ready to bin this and get a Porsche warranty however the dealer is telling me that I'm mad as the JCT600 one is better. Any opinions on this?

PCCB - the car has PCCB. I'm not planning to do more than a handful of tracks days and so I don't think I have a right lot to worry about with these. Additionally the car is going into OPC for checks before delivery. However, I don't trust OPC or anyone else for that matter. Can anyone give me a description of what the warning signs are on a ceramic disk so I can draw my own conclusions?

There must be someone who has experience of JCT600 warranty vs OPC?

Thanks

Unfortunately can't really help you, but to say with a car of that standing I would definately prefer a warranty with the manufacturer themselves & not some third party (who are more likely to 'vanish').

check out my thread and pictures of my PCCBs.

I too have only done a few track days and they became dangerous and failed.

To check they should look light grey not dark, try comparing front to rear.

Also if you run your finger across the face (when cold) they should be as smooth as a babies bum. Any sign of pitting or roughness (they will fail imminently)

To be on the safe side budget £3000 for the Alcon steel discs from JZM, you can replace all four and get a better braking feel.

I would have thought JCT600 used Porsche warranties anyway? For a GT2 (or any other Porsche) they only cost about £750 which is cheap for such a potentially expensive car. Can't understand why JCT600 would be selling/giving some other kind of warranty.

Hmmm, thanks for the replies. Now worried about the disks. I definitely recall them being pitted to some extent.

Will post some pics up later (when my f**king website is back up - Nathan )

I've been through three pairs of PCCBs, so know the warning signs........post pictures, large pitting in the surface is the clue to degredation.

As for warranties, only OPCs can issue a Porsche warranty, couldn't comment on an independent warranty.

Guy - can I mail you the pics of the disks for your opinion as you've been through 3 sets?

Dove House have told me the warranty is underwritten by the same co. as Porsche. Additionally they reckon it is better than a Porsche warranty as Porsche do not include what they know are weak points. That said I guess you may not get any 'good will' out of Porsche if you don't have their warranty.

I thought JCT600 were a franchised Porsche dealer, so why are they recommending a non Porsche warranty?

Am I missing something important here?

Ian - sorry, to clarify. I am buying the car from Dove House. The have said to me it has a JCT600 warranty (whom I hadn't heard of) which has 18mnths left to run. If JCT600 are a franchised dealer then I don't know what they are talking about. Will clarify...

This could turn into an interesting little situation...

Have just rung Silverstone who are doing the inspection and told them I want the disks checked and double checked by their most senior technician, then a call back with their view on the disks. If they say the disks need replacing then the dealer whom I buying the car from will have an £8k bill on their hands. I have a contract which states 'all defects' shown on OPC check will be rectify FOC prior to delivery. Well I would be very suprised if they are sitting on £8k of margin.

JCT600 are a very large motor group that owns the OPCs in Leeds, Newcastle and Sheffield.

They are showing some signs of early wear. The backs of the disks are often worse I'm told.

New ones are perfectly smooth and a consistent colour. As they get more worn those little fibrous looking indentations get larger and larger and then the outer finish will suddenly start to come off enmasse leaving you with 'rusty' looking disks that eat pads at a prodigious rate.

Dan - thanks for your opinion. Obviously rate of deterioration will be proportional to usage and type of usage going forward. But when you say 'signs of early wear', do you think we are talking 5000 miles and a couple of track days or more like 20,000 miles and and a lot of track days. Or is it total finger in air...?

Forgot to mention earlier. When I spoke to the Silverstone service manager he admitted he was aware of the stories issues with PCCB but that he had never had a car with an issue at that garage. This amazes me, given the number of stories I've heard on this board.

My guess is that one tends to get more enthusiastic drivers on forums, so more likely to have had issues with the disks.

I wouldn't like to hazard a guess on the life expectancy your disks, I'm just contrasting them with what brand new ones look like, and what mine look like.

I've reconciled myself to needing to change to another solution. I'm upset by the >3k cost though for some pads + rotors

p.s. 8k defect? I think its more than that for 4x ceramic disks including refurb of hats?

Could be. Just thought I recalled £8k being mentioned by another owner on the forum.

I hope Silverstone come back and tell me that they are on their way out tomorrow. A nice compromise might be if I can convince the dealer to change for alcons. I test drove another GT2 with alcons and preferred the feel.

Have you read the small print on your 'contract'? Unless they're the dumbest dealers in history, I don't think they'll have left themselves open to the sort of bills you're talking about. I think there'll be an "or we'll take the car back" escape route in there somewhere.

Let us know. I'd like to be proved wrong!
