Love Porsche allways have!

Drive an 05 Mercedes CLK 220 CDI through work which looks nice and is economical or slow but would love to get into a porsche. I think the 997 TT in seal grey would be me my ultimate car full stop, however that is someway in the distance (i hope)!!!!!

I am getting married and building a house this year (great timing I know) and as such am thinking of keeping the sensible Berc and maybe buying say a £10,000 porsche (911??) for a year for some fun and then once wedding and house is built upgrading to maybe 996 C4s, Cayman or used 997(not S)or something of that nature.

So what would you guys reccommend for £10,000 I appreciate that the mileage is gonna be high etc but just fancy some thing to have a blast in on the weekends other than a diesel Mercedes.It may just keep me sane?

Can it be done???

Or should I just wait till build is over circa 10 months and go for one of the afforementioned then??????? My head says wait but heart says 10k fun runner?

Would be interested to know your thoughts

very low budget for a decent 911! - if its just for fun then I would go LHD and look for a sorted 3.2 carrera, preferably with a a G50 gearbox. bear in mind that any 911 you buy for this price (or even twice this price) is going to feel decidedly agricultural next to your merc (though much much more fun) - even in LHD you are looking at a 12-20 year old car, since only a LHD 964 or earlier is in your price range

ooh no! dont take it like that! I'd never discourage from porsche ownership. but for 10k your 911 choices are pretty limited and you are looking at a very old car. it will be ENORMOUS fun. but it will be old and you will need to be very careful choosing

as an alternative you could pick up a mint 944 turbo for that price, or a very good 968 (particularly if you choose a tiptronic) - the latter having a more modern feel and interior.

To be honest I think waiting is the most sensible thing to do moneywise anyway, just seems a bloody long time and im pretty bored with the Merc, maybe if i wait itll be all the sweeter when the time comes??!!

To be honest just because I have read a few articles pitting the two against each other and 2 of the articles have preferred the standard model? I think Chris Harris was one of the authors but cant recall the other!!

997 TT really floats my boat cant wait see the reviews have read tests fro Autocar but it was in the snow somewhere!! beleive Top Gear have just tested F430,997Turbo and Gallardo!

May pick that up this evening.

Whats your feeling on the standard vs S 997 I have never driven either so am really going on what I have read? would like to know your thoughts?

Dunno Joe .. It's all pipe dream stuff to me , but when I'm in the mood for a spot of mental masturbation , it's the 's' that floats my boat .. slightly bigger engine , therefore , whatsit , about 355 bhp , also a couple of nice extras as standard .
I always fancied the 996c4s , the big arse (sorry the athletic haunches!) especially , but didn't much care for the 4wd aspect , so this to me is the c2s that never made it into the 996 range.
I can see why a 4s makes sense for a 993 owner .. the scorpion sting seems to have diminished somewhat on the later models. What I'm finding difficult to find out is whether the 997s has a wider rear than it's standard cousin?

Go out and buy a 3.2 Carrera. You`ll probably get your £10k back once you`ve had your fuss, (certainly the thick end of it).

Don`t listen to any rubbish about specific models, colours, years, specs. Just concentrate on buying a good honest car. It won`t be easy and for sure there is far more bad than good around but you`ll have a great fun 2nd car. You should also be able to buy RHD if that bothers you, (although going LHD can certainly bring some interesting options into play).

My take (and I'm quite new to the world of Porsches so there will probably be others that disagree), is yes it can be done.

Last year we bought a 1983 911 SC. We sold it 6 months later for £7,250 (9 months MOT, tax, fully serviced, all working, etc...)

Although it was quite agricultural, we absolutely loved it and it was a real hoot.

Funnily enough it gave us the Porsche Bug enough to seek out more modern models and as a result we picked up our Cayman on Friday!

I think you'll need advice from people as to how to get a well looked after, good one (but I think a lot of common sense comes into play here), but YES you can do it and should!!

Buy my 968CS, more pracitcal than a 911 and it has had all the major weak points seen too and is a great way into Porsche Ownership. You may have £10K to spend but you will need to have enough money to put away for routine maint & un-expected problems.
