Acknowledging other Porsche drivers

It`s been touched on in other postings but a lovely gesture and something that should be encouraged.
I was out on a test drive the other day in the 308 Ferrari and came up behind a chap who lives locally in his 575 Ferrari, (we both owned 456 Ferraris at the same time), he won`t have a clue who I am but as he pulled into his drive I gave him a pip on the horn and he waved back. A lovely moment. Wasn`t life changing and no bodily fluids were swapped but on a bright sunny day it just spreads the love a little.
Obviously I am in a variety of Porsches ranging from Cayennes to 3.2 Carreras and I`ll often give people a little nod, a flash of the lights or a flick of the wrist. Some people wave back, some don`t.
So make a point, next time you see someone in another Porsche say hello. Next thing you know there will be world peace, war will be over and free love will rule the earth.

I got flashed by another Porsche driver once. I waved back. Then it dawned on me that it was a dealer with a punter in the pax seat trying to make it look like it was a friendly world of Porsche love. Not like my Lotus owning days where everyone did wave. More inclined to nod to drivers of older Porkers as at least then you can assume they are probably enthusiasts not status buyers.
Generally, all older porkers wave, no newer ones (986/996 on) do except the obvious enthusiasts cars (GT3/RS).
Thats because most of them are oblivious to the sporting heritage blah blah blah of the marque.
I only wave to the older ones now - sometimes get a wave from the newer ones which I return. If I do forget myself and wave/flash a newer one 9 out of 10 look blankly back at me with a Huh? Wha???? expression.

When I first started driving I had a Reliant Supervan III. Almost without fail fellow drivers would flash (shared embarrassment?).
Mercifully, in later years I have been blessed with a variety of Porsches but I have to echo an earlier poster who said it is really only the owners of older or specialist cars that have this cameraderie.

Yeah nice sentiment Henry - we all should make more of an effort. Once out of London on the motorbike every biker nods back regardless of bike or brand. But in the few times I've waved at other Porsche drivers I've had nothing back. Not even from the fella in the seal grey C4S I was sitting next to in traffic yesterday. People were all pointing and looking at our immaculate wide bodied 911s side by side glistening in the sunshine.

: I only really get waves back off older cars (is this because I have an 'older car myself 
) and now I've come to expect no response from the 996 models onwards and boxsters but always give it a shot. Not that this applies to everyone with the later cars as once in a blue moon I do get a wave back. Got my last 
2 weeks ago, funnily enough off Sambaman in his 964rs (holgate road) so c'mon all, flick those wrists!

Without wishing to stir up any angst amongst the troops I think it fair to say that amongst some of the newer cars there may be owners, certainly not on this forum of course, that simply don`t know the Porsche heritage and don`t realise their Boxster, (for example), is actually related to a 968 / 944 / 911 and not an Audi TT, BM Z3 or S2000, the cars they probably pay most attention to on the road.
Of course in London traffic you`re not going to wave for fear of getting shot, in the same way you don`t look at or talk to anyone on the tube for fear of getting stabbed. I`m talking in the rest of the country.
Let`s lead the way and help carry the marque forward this summer with a wave or a smile. And if someone points at your car and says how cool it looks smile back, give them the thumbs up and say thanks. It took a lot of courage on their part so don`t shun them in an effort to look cool.
This time next year it`ll be like a Honda diesel advert with everyone waving and smiling at you as trundle along from speed camera to speed camera.

I can only recount that 400 yards after driving out of Bramley's (Guildford) last Autumn in my newly acquired 911 Carrera Club Sport, that I found myself waving to, and being waved at, from - by happy coincidence - another Club Sport! Welcome to the world of Porsche I thought to myself!
