944 turbo v 944s2
Discussion
Guys thinking of buying one of these cars, i have heard things about the s2 being a better daily driver as the turbo can be frustrating (big lag). I used to run a turbo but not driven an s2. Is there much difference in running costs? mpg? i dont foresee a good condition one of either would depreciate much now. Also prices seem to vary alot from 4k to 10k (nice turbo in PH classifieds for that price). What would you need to spend to get a good one?

The S2 is a better daily driver as less things go wrong and it's cheaper to run and fill up (in my experience as I have owned both 944 S2 cab and 944 Turbo). The Turbo was by far the more exciting car tho'.
Prices vary because of the work needed currently or in the near future on them. They are old cars and they can be expensive to run. It always makes me laugh when people think 944s are much cheaper to run than 911s because I have seen some 2.5k invoices for 944s before now
I'd spend 10k and get the best I could. Even better get a 968CS as it may even appreciate and is a classier/newer proposition (in my opinion).
As with all these purchases it does depend on the car
With the S2 you have the issue of the chain/tensioner/slipper which is very expensive and not on any service schedule.
The turbo/engine is very reliable (though more complex I admit)
and 968's are still poor VFM

968's start at around £8k on Autotrader, although a good CS is more like £14k. They're well-built but do have some common faults (inc. oil leaks, cam tensioner & cams, diff, water leaks).
However, IMO they offer an excellent combination of performance, handling, practicality, & style for the money, and hove not dated anything like the 944's.

I picked up a clean 1992 S2 with 80K & FSH for £5K. I've only had it a few weeks but am happy with it. As all things its what you get for the money you spend, and I think a S2 represents excellent value for money. I just wanted a weekend car that I could run on a budget and this fits the bill nicely.
210 bhp is plenty for me and unless your really after turbo performance why pay for it ?
Dont get to hung up on this "it looks dated" talk as eventally all cars will look dated. Thats why you can get classic car insurance !

Style - 968 in the same sentence ? Someone beat the thing with the big bad ugly stick
Let's be brutal it's a tarted up 944
I wouldnt say tarted up, it just improved on an already good looking car. I think the 968 looks better from all angles with exception to the front. Although the lights are better it really needs a spiltter to finish it off. I have never driven a 944 but from what I have read the 968 is an improvement but whether you can justify twice the the price I am not sure.
