have found a low mile 993 cab tiptronic for very little more than the 911's & 964's I have been looking at.

Having it checked over but havent driven a 993 for a few years, anything I should look for & how does it differ to the earlier cars.

All help very gratefully received.

cheers

Err, it's a ton better technically.

Of course, some 'classic' 911 owners may claim it is lacking the character of the earlier cars should you be a sauerkraut slurping krautophile with a collection of coalscuttle helmets and pictures of Kaiser Wilhelm on your tea cloths. This is sort of true, but you have to love character vs progress and antiques vs modernism.

Get it inspected and enjoy. They're great value, too, as the 993 can is a bit unloved as a model. So it may not be best for resale but you'll get a bargain now.

Such perception for his target audience! I'll take three dozen (do they come with the comedy egg cup holders fashioned from Rhinefall granite?)

Bit unloved !! Where did you get that strange thought !! They are very much still an aspirational model, I have far more people contacting the Register looking than selling, and good ones are not around very long ...

You need to do your homework and understand what you are getting into, but the only reason that 993 prices are at all soft at present is the fact that 996s nosedived past them. Good examples of desirable models still command solid prices.

Tips are over-represented in the market, as they are definitely not seen as desirable, although they might be bloody useful at times. Cabs .... well, shall we say a niche market. Reminder of the recall on roof motors is perhaps timely ??

cheers, Maurice

Niche --- Who are you calling niche, only joking.

Had my 993 cab about ayear and a half now and it is great 1997 so its one of the last and its a man not a tip.

I can see there could be some cheap example about but probably not because they are unloved but maybe because they are not well looked afer i.e.may need some bits and bobs doing i.e :

Door check straps £600 -700 (my favourite subject)
Alignement check £300 -400 (including bits)
Wheel refurb £300 -400
Dampers / Bushes £400 -400

And other sunderies you could very easliy spend a good 2 - 4k getting one up to scratch ?

And re the roof motors I was pleased for the recall, droped car off in the morning at opc got it back valeted with two brand new roof motors in the evening FREE !!!!

Still if some one knows of a good home for a pampered 993 cab let me know as I will be selling mine shortly

Sorry, I meant to write 993 CAB is a bit unloved as a model, not the 993. The 993 if anything is quite strong and has contributed to the 996 nosedive at the lower end of that market. The 993 manual C2 coupes, Turbos and RSs will always be pretty firm, but the cab was never really loved because of its slightly awkward looks and image compared to the 'enthusiasts' choice of standard C2 etc. And enthusiasts are the ones who tend to drive prices for old cars up if they like them, in the private market.

A bit... something like a second on the 0-60. Great in traffic tho.

I'd mainly worry about the resale... tip cabs will always be less desirable on the second hand market compared to a manual coupe.

I am in a similar boat to the original poster, i was primarily looking at a 964 as the last of the classic 911 looking cars, but have since changed my mind and i now really like the 993. A list of all pro's and cons of this variant would be greatly appreciated. I noticed servicing is more expensive for the 993 over the 964, presumably just because its newer and more complicated? Can you enlighten me more on that list of potential costs posted earlier..ie door straps £600-700 !!?

Think you'll find that servicing is significantly cheaper for the 993 than for the 964, see www.northway.co.uk/servicing.asp for example, which seems to be the most expensive car to service with the indies at least.

I would think that the 964 would be the first of the modern driving 911's rather than the last of the classics (whether thats good or bad I dont know). Drives similarly to the 993 and not much like the 3.2, the 996 a completely different drive again

As self apointed door check strap king the story goes something like this to save a bit of money porsche decided to use one weld as oposed to two in previous models to hold the door check strap to the inside wing.

If you don't have them re done (assuming hey have failed ) you will bend the bottom corner of the doors out wards. The start of this scan be found by creaking or lumpy door opening.

As for £600 - 700 that is for a specialist doing the job ( the cheapest I have seen)

However mine was done by my opc at a cost of £1561.00 (original quote £2500 !!!!!!!) as mine was a 97 (bodywork warranty) I managed after a year long fight and great help from pheaders to get it done under warranty.

IMHO 993 is a bit of a dinosaur...i love the quality and history and passion of the car but to be fair they do drive really badly compared to 996/997....
