Anyone had one go on a GT3?

I've just had mine replaced under warranty with a new "improved version".

It seems as if no 996/997 is safe from the dreaded RMS.

Lets see how long this one holds up.

Of course they do...it is not the same as the Boxta/C2 & C4 one though as the block is different.....a rear main bearing seal is used to stop the oil flowing out.

It also seems to be lacking power after the work to repair the vehicle.

What is it with Porsche these days??

Its now no faster than my Audi S4, in fact it feels slower.

I'll let rip if they ed my car.

Hey James

This sounds a bit odd. Is this all related to the small oil leak that they sorted in October? Are you still dealing with Burgess Hill?

Power loss........ maybe you are just getting used to it. If not through it back at them. Matbe put it on a rolling road and show them the results. I have never done this, but the engine was always stronge. In fact other RS and MK2 owners often comented that it pulled well.

Jonathon,

Before it went in it was really pulling nicely.

Afterwards it felt very different.

But I've hooked the car up to some GPS data logging equipment and done some very basic tests. i.e 1-60mph with a rolling start at 1mph.

You'd expect about 4.7-4.9 secs, especially with the rolling start.

I managed a best of 5.9secs, somewhat dissapointing.

I presume to change the seal they simply remove the gearbox and not the whole engine.

Its very strange.

Question: can the onboard diagnostic/ecu tell if a spark lead/coil pack is missing?

I wonder if a plug lead/coil pack has become detached during the recent work, its the only thing I can think of that would make such a sudden difference.

If so, I'm guessing that the engine will have been subjected to about 20 miles of bore wash.

I once had an engine that lost 2 plugs and received only 40 minutes bore wash. The result? The oil was so badly washed that the cam lobes were worn away, and good bye engine.

Fingers crossed its something non damaging and easy to rectify.

James.

Obviously could be several things, impossible to diagnose over the net.....
The diagnostics can tell if electrics packs are playing up or maf is not connected/expired for example.

I would get car down to be hooked up at OPC pronto...

Rob T, from your RMS comment...are you still working as an OPC mechanic??

I'm assuming they disconnected the battery whilst doing the work, if they did the car just might be relearning. If there's any difference in the results from the oxygen sensors or a MAF issue the car would have a CEL (check engine light) on the dashboard.

I agree with Paul. Get it back to OPC asap and insist that they hook it up and check all is ok. If worried about using it get them to collect on trailer. If still in doubt carry on up the road to Parr and get them to check it out. Speak to Paul, he is very helpful. Then through any bill back at the OPC.

Don't stand for any shite.

Good luck. Cheers

RMS = pain in the ass but fixable.

Power loss = maybe lot more serious (check it out!)

Get it checked out by either JZM or Parr. I wouldn't trust an (any) OPC with a problem like this. Speak to Steve McHale at JZM - he sorted a major problem with my Mk1 (defective clutch install when I bought the car), and they were ultra-professional throughout. LAST thing you want is to risk trashing that engine because of poor/faulty maintenance work.

RMS can go on GT3s/Turbos, but almost unheard of - it's a different engine to the stock 996 unit...much, much tougher.

Problem sorted.

One loose connector for the vario cam unit.

Well done Porsche for fixing it, although it shouldn't have happened in the first place.
