Buying a Damaged/repaired 993 turbo? :confused:

iv been offered the car for 35k. i think its sounds good because in the autotrader they are going for 50k to 60k. its got bout 50k mileage. wat i like is the fact that it has the turbo s body with the air vents behind the doors. not all 993 turbos have that. im not sure what to do. im still thinking of it.

I am just learning but i think a Cat C is definetly a no no. Cat D i think being least damaged. These cars looks favourable at buying because of the price but it will probably haunt you when you come to sell it. Plus i do not know what the insurance consequences are of getting one.
If you saw what these cars looked like when first damaged she would probably be shocked.
I am still searching for my boxster and have to tell myself forget everything thats recorded as tempting as they look as desparate as i might get

from the sounds of your post, you're very much a novice. that's not an insult, most people (including me) wouldnt know where to start with this car. its a 10-14 year old supercar that's been beaten up at some point. If you have mechanical and trade knowledge, and access to your own garage (or a best mate who runs one) then ok, but unless you are very careful, very knowledgable and very lucky you should proceed extremely cautiously. Pay good money for someone who really knows his onions to inspect it under a microscope. (and remember, a thorough inspection costs less than two rear tyres - money well spent).

I agree with all of the above comments. I wouldn't touch it even at £30K. You've only got to replace a few of the normal wear and tear items like turbos, shocks etc and you'll be back above £40K anyway.

Another angle is to find out who repaired it and establish what was done, if you can be bothered (and quite frankly unless its a bargain, which it isn't), why bother....
E.g. could have been reshelled, cos to cat C a turbo takes some doing, my understanding is that the insurance has decided not to repair the car but sell it as a damaged repairable and someone else has repaired it.
So the damage could have costed say £30K to fix, car worth £42K, got £15K from scrapper hence they re-appear, chap gets hold of a cheap shell and hey presto. Some evening work putting it back together....

Accident damaged cars are not always a cause for concern, you can make a substantial saving, providing they have been repaired properly!!! if you get an independant porsche specialist to inspect it you shouldn't go far wrong.
As an addition (and imho this is more of a danger!) don't get sucked into the romance of paying well above the odds for a "low mileage minter" you will lose more money doing this than you ever will buying damaged repaired!
There is nothing wrong with repairing a car if it's had a bump and it's a mith that there "never the same again, or don't handle the same etc.. race cars crash all the time, if they didn't handle "right" they'd lose valuable tenths a lap. you just have to be very careful that the car you buy has been repaired properly, and please be aware that there are ALOT of cars out there that have had accidents and have been repaired that are not recorded, at least this way you know what your getting.

I'm confused, why run away? I'm not trying to ruffle anyones feathers or upset anyone but I'd like to know what your all basing your advice on? I have had 2 accident damaged Porsches in the past both cars were repaired properly and never gave me anymore problems than if they were undamaged cars,and I lost £1000 on the first one when I sold it and actually made on the second one.
I do agree that you have to be very careful, but thats the same whatever car you buy. I just don't think it's enough or fair to just say run away.

My fastidiously maintained silver 993 Turbo was up for 42K on PH recently.It has just under 50 K miles. It's up for sale at Shirleys, has a FSH, recent new clutch, forged 3 piece cross spokes, Super clean, and my obsessive antics in terms changing little clips, belts and things.
They now have it up for 45K, however I'm kind of hoping it doesnt sell as I may bring it over to Germany....
