993 C2 or 996 C4S
Discussion
I know it's probably a SFQ but a bit of a dilemma building.
I love my 993 C2. Awesome and an air cooled classic. What I thought a Porsche should be after a subdued time with my previous 986 S Boxster.
No sooner am I happy than my 'head has been turned' by an article on the 996 C4S. With sports exhaust, this car is apparently the nuts!
I know the usual caveats about driving both any probably a £15K price difference but anyone owned both and got an opinion/advice for me.
There's too much temptation in this world of Porsche. It's guaranteed to drive me to bankruptcy one day!!!

See if you can try a mildly modified 993 i.e. with decent sounding exhausts, maybe a bit more power, etc. The 996 2002 wheels look beautiful on a 993.
I'm obviously going to say stick with the 993 (as will the rest of the usual 993 suspects) but if you're getting slightly bored, try fiddling a bit with your car first before swapping for an entirely different experience. Or simply try the 996 and if you love it, buy one! They are good value at the mo.

Stouffer - at the risk of receiving some flack, DON'T DO IT....!
Seriously tho' - I ordered a new C4S based on all the 'outstanding' articles. It was allegedly the best road car Porsche built (tt anyone). Anyway, yes, it is a bloody good car, but one with very little soul (compared to other 911's(996's)). I prefered my pre-facelift car - honestly! I sold the 4S after 6 months because it was just too capable - it felt like a bit of a barge too - the 4wd IMHO is not as nice as a 2wd car - all delicacy lost in the steering dept.
I did a trip to Scotland in mine, and to be fair, for that kind of driving it was great, but the love affair was very short lived.
I sold mine to KayC, and he got bored with it even quicker than me....!

Interesting question.
I can't claim to have both these cars, but my neigbour does (or did have) and he's the guy that encouraged me to buy a 911 with some good advice. He had one of the last 993C2S's and then switched to 996 C4S as his next car.
The question I asked him was "I want to buy a 911 but know nothing about them and don't know whether to get a 993 or 996". Once he had ascertained that I only wanted it as a weekend car, he didn't hesitate to recomend a 993 over a 996, and definately a C2 not a C4. But it's obviously horses for courses and these are two very different animals.
He loves his 996 C4S, but missed his 993 and thought the latter more likely to be the best fit for me as a weekend fun car that would provide the 'real' 911 experience I was seeking. The 996 is undoubtedly faster, more comfortable, better handling, more refined etc but it doesn't, in his words, "feel like a real 911". And I decided he should know as he's had 911's as his main car since the late 80's.

Raven Flyer said:IMHO - if you want 'unmatchable' pace, go for an EVO 1X FQ.....
It takes a good day of instruction (or self application for those that are skilled) to get the best out of a 4. When you have it, you will never go back. The pace you can set is unmatchable.
"A 993 you say, would Sir like another 100bhp?"
Like I said, the 4S is an excellent car, but lacks involvement.....again, only IMO......
I think if you try both cars, you'll go for the 4S, as it's instantly good, the 993 will keep you interested for longer - much depends on the kind of person/driver you are.....
Hi guys, I think we are all very much the same we want to change cars so we can delight in the driving and owning of another. Its amazing that over the past couple of months i have found myself feeling a change coming on just like the author of the topic starter and also just like him i came to my 993 C2 coupe from a box S with a scooby P1 in between (now that was a bl%%dy quick car) I realy fancy a mk1 gt3 and will drive one next year when i feel A. they will be at about their lowest price and B. i will have the funds to change up. So in the meantime a little tinkering with the 993 will keep me happy, in fact after typing this thread i am off to the garage to fit my RSR style exhaust, i bought a used standard set of boxes and have modded them myself, at least if i have made a complete boll%x of them i still have the originals and anyway all the fiddling keeps me out of mischief. Will let you all know how they sound, they should be ok i did what another PHer did after stripping down a pair of original RSRs so heres hoping they sound just right. oh and by the way if any mk1 gt3 owner out there would like to take me out for a spin (not literally) it would make my day. Heres hoping, cheers.
For what it's worth, I moved from a 993 C4 to a 996 C4s. Here are the reasons.
While the 993 had engineering, quality and character, the 996 has improvements in the form of dynamics etc. I also find the my son actually enjoys the 996 more, and believe it or not, doe not get car sick in the 996, unlike the 993.
While my perspective may be rather narrow, as a "Family" car, the 996 is easier to live with. Better interior, more amenities, and less spartan.
Having said that, the 993 will always have a special place, I cannot explain why, or what it is.
In summary, if the car is for you, and you do not need to cater to outside influences, then I would go the 993. If however you want to consider the possibility of somebody sitting into your car and saying "this car feels expensive" then the 996 is the one for you. I had one person who sat in the 993, and loved it, and subsequently sat in the 996, and they loved it also, but they also said that they could understand why I spent that amount of money on the 996.
I am not too sure if that has helped anything.
