I am sure I am not the first to ask this Q. I would love to own a porsche but......... the forums that I have read on the subject do not help much, I was thinking of buying a 996 for approx 30k but it looks like if I spend this amount the thing will break down or blow up costing me a fortune for the privalige.
Do I buy a 996 or go for the more reliable (i think) 993??????????

oh dear, the perils of reading forums. you need an injection of perspective. most 996s dont blow up. most are very reliable. sports cars by definition come under greater mechanical strain than other cars, and porsches are designed for this. yes, they need lookng after. yes, they can need money spending. but they are supremely enjoyable and repay the investment in sheer fun alone.
POrsche warranty costs about £730 a year IIRC. inspection for warranty about £200 i think. you do not need to buy from an OPC to get one. find the car you like. get an OPC inspection, buy the warranty and then ENJOY
993 have far fewer RMS issues but they still break. the advantage of a 996 is that you CAN insure it against the common problems. You cant get an OPC warranty on a 993 cos they are all over 9 years old so if you are new to the marque and nervous about liability, go for the newer car

I bought a 996 privately for under £30k, came with a Porsche Warranty too.
A failed MOT highlighted some components that needed replacing. My nearest OPC did the work without quibble. I'm definately renewing the warranty when it's due.
My advise - get it inspected, get a warranty, enjoy.

Drive both, the 996 is faster and a better all-round car. The 993 has its charms, looks dated inside, but is better built.
Not sure the older 993 would be more reliable than a 996, 996's are not unreliable, despite efforts of posters who perpetuate the line that the 993 is problem free at any age, while at the same time making out the 996 is likely to explode into flames while sitting on your drive way.

The choice of 996 vs 993 is yours - try both & decide, they're quite different. The 996 is closely related to the Boxster which means parts might be pretty reasonable. I needed to replace my 993 cab roof motors last year - they were 2x 996/Boxster prices. 996 engines (if you ever need one) are also a lot cheaper than 993's. You might find 996's cost no more than 6-cylinder BMW's to run / maintain so go for it....
You have to "discount" the tales of woe you read on these forums regarding RMS somewhat.

People post when something goes wrong, so it makes the problems seem more prevalent than they are in reality.
If you drive one and love it, get yourself a 996. As said above, get the warranty, so if it does happen to you you are covered.

Most of the cars I looked at had had the RMS issues addressed. The previous owner had to have it replaced before Porsche would offer the warranty.
With the amount of 996s out there and your budget you'l easily find a good one.
I tried several of both, preferred the performance and feel of the 996.
I drive and enjoy it every day, and not once has the engine exploded in flames, fallen out or disappeared in a puff of smoke.
I would say that running costs are higher than a lot of mid bracket exec. saloons, because of the oil and tyres every 6 months, but not anything to get worried about.
Get is maintained by an independent and the costs get sensible.
