Seems the case, the cheapest old nail 996 on auto trader has a 100K on the clock and is £23K, hardly under 20K.

Absolutely! The one thing we as 911 owners share is the chain that links our residuals .. In the USA they called it 'Domino Thoery' . I've been watching prices for some time now and the one predictable fact is a high milage early 996 C2 is going to sell for the same money as a similar or slightly lower milage 993 C2 that's 2/3 ish years older.
Now this MAY be an over generalisation , and as such is wide open to argument with specific detail , but the lesson to learn is, talking down 996's , brings down 993 prices.
I agree. As 996 prices fall, 993 prices will fall also.
There will always be a market for prestige 993s like GT2s and low mileage minters, but your average punter will always prefer an equivalent 996 as it's the newer shape, sir.......
There are only so many bearded connoisseurs about, so when 993 owners start waxing lyrical about their bullet proof residuals and how poor 996s are, they are surely just turkeys talking up Xmas......!

There will always be a market for prestige 993s like GT2s and low mileage minters, but your average punter will always prefer an equivalent 996 as it's the newer shape, sir.......
There are only so many bearded connoisseurs about, so when 993 owners start waxing lyrical about their bullet proof residuals and how poor 996s are, they are surely just turkeys talking up Xmas......!

Have you sold your 996 for a gt3 yet?
I think in the last few months 993s have taken a hit. Very good cars were at around £33k 12 months ago. I wouldn't pay over £30k for a 993 today, regardless of its mileage. I reckon £28k should about be the right price for a very good 993. PCGB magazine has had quite a few which have not shifted at around the £32k mark. They are all now reaching the age when £3k p.a. costs are going to be the norm to keep them in shape - even on a R plate.

Maybe in a year or so, the average punter will want a 997 as it's the latest shape but be happy with a 993 as it looks so similar

Do people would realise 993 prices are not only to do with them being "better" ?
There are simply more 996s due to Porsche manufacturing them in their 10,000s compared to 993's - mapped to demand.
If given a choice of a 996 C2 or a 993 C2 to drive home I would take the 996, so too I would buy one (and have done so) as it represents better value for money.
I have had a 993 and I loved it but it is not as dynamically capable as a 996. Period.
It certainly does have more character however, if a creaking roof, clunky controls, dangerous wet weather road holding, dated interior, lower fuel economy, being heavier, having a louder engine, rustic manufacturing, and less power add up to more "character".
Now I'll sit back and take the flack ...

I'd like to think so (as I'm in the market for one), but haven't seen any evidence of it yet. I'd have expected early 997Ss to be under 60K by now, but it doesn't seem like it ...
