I haven't bothered to check the exact figures, but guessing how much CO2 comes out of the back of my car, I'm assuming a lot of us will now be liable for the higher road tax of £210. Friends of the Earth were pushing for a £600 levy, so suddenly it doesn't sound so much.
My question is though, how much would you baulk at giving to Rt Hon Mr Brown? Obviously us evil planet-abusers in our gas-guzzling sports cars pay more taxes already in fuel duty, but how road tax much is too much for you? What would it take to get you out of your Porsche and into a Prius?

Good question.. Well with 3 Porsches already costing me a small fortune it probably wouldn’t take too much. Here we go. To keep all three car £400 each. To keep two
£ 600.00 and that would hurt (a lot). To keep one £1000-1200-1400 £££££££ who knows?? What about the rest of you?

I found out mine from this SMMT website. Sorry it's no good for you though Bob, as it only goes back as far as 1997. It's still fun playing with it though - according to the pulldowns, the 997 will be in production until 2007 and the highest output of CO2 I found was the Ferrari F50 at 624. God I'm dull.

If you do a vehicle enquiry at the DVLA (www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/) it will tell you what catagory your car is in by giving you the g/Km rating. Older cars are not included and therefore pay a flat rate (£170/year - but just increased I believe). As I said in the previous post though, the change is not retro-active - it's only for new sales.

I would love to line FOE up against a wall and unleash a minigun on the scum.
I don't have a problem with increasing the road tax to relflect the pollution levels a car emits. However, this surely should be done on a mileage basis? To go even further, 1000 miles in a city will pollute more than 1000 miles on a motorway.
As usual, the only solution is to scrap road tax and apply the charge to fuel. This will give a direct relation to how much pollution is produced - city driving = more fuel = more pollution = more tax.

THe whole thing seems a bit pointless really, so how many people are either going to give up their sports cars/4x4/big saloons just because the tax has gone up by £40pa. Is only half a tank of petrol so will completely unnoticeable.
Conversly who the hell is going to buy a tax exempt car just to save £170 pa. In both cases the tax pales in insignificance against depreciation!

i think the point is by splitting it into bands they can hit people who dont vote for them. lets be honest, most people won't have any sympathy for the average porsche/ferrari/4x4 driver (the opposite in fact) if, over time, they raise the top band to a few grand. just creating the bands is only the begining

The new rate doesn't just effect porsche/ferrari/4x4 though, if my 2.5V6 mondeo was new, then it would be covered. This band effects lots more cars than our pointless media would have you believe, they have just been banging on about 4x4s.

my point wasnt repeating what the bbc is portraying in its typically lefty simplified way, its that this is the thin end of the wedge, once the bands system is established they will be able to target us in the name of being green (in both senses)
i agree at the moment it doesnt make much difference, infact i doubt it will even pay for the added complextity and beaurocracy to collect and enforce.
interestingly the company cars ministers have are not company cars so they are not taxed for them the way the rest of us are, they are pool cars, even though they use them to get to and from work... but thats a whole other thread
stick any number plate (incl cherished ones) and make of car and it gives you the new rate of road tax.

just for fun we stuck "AMS 1" and "Rolls Royce" and were suprised to see that even Mr Alan Sugar only has to pay £190 for 12 months on his 7 litre phantom!!!!? Sure he can afford it
