Best road tyre for 964 RS?

My Michelin Pilot Sport Cups are the end of the line and I now need to change all four.

Michelins were ok but need a lot of heat from my experience to get the best out of them. Have heard that Bridgestone SO2's are well regarded for mainly road and not too bad for track!?

Any experiences/suggestions for good road tyres appreciated.

I haven't got an RS, but do have a 964 with RS height Bilsteins and H&Rs fitted, I use SO2's which were better than the F1 goodyears that came with the car, sorry best I can offer.

I'd recommend Pirrelli Assyms/Directionals with lots of tread left.....but that might be because I have a set of almost new ones for sale scince I'm leaving my Cup Sports or Dunlop SSRs on all the time now...

I had some SO2s on my RS, and when pushed, they offered very little grip on standard susp geo. I guess it depends what you want to use the car for?

So what did you end up with Fergus, I'm due some replacements soon...and had set my heart on the SO2's

I heard SO2's were the way to go for Road use. I've had my MPSC's for about 4 months and they are all but down to the wear indicator now.

Dont really want to be changing full sets of those 2 or 3 times a year for what they cost!

I run Dunlops SuperSport race on mine all time. Not as good as Cups on a dry track, but close and much better than a regular road tyre (on track). Clearly not quite as "all round" as a proper road tyre like SO2, but saves too much messing around if you go to and fro to a number of track days.

Thought they had been replaced by a new Dunlop track tyre. Or am I getting mixed up with D01J and DZ02G?

Dunlop SSRs are no longer in production, a big mistake by Dunlop I think everyone agrees.

Their replacement I believe has had a lot of bad press....

Where?? The D01J and DZ02G are superb from what I have seen but have not got as wide a size range as the SSR's... And if you sniff around enough you can still find a few SSR's knocking about....

Are the Dunlops road or race? The original question asked for a road tyre, and as I'm interested in this, I thought I'd put my head above the parapet and ask.

So SSR, Road Race or both??

SSR's are "track day" tyres - they are road legal but aimed at track use. They are fine for the road in primarily dry conditions. The tyres work OK in the wet but you really want to be avoiding standing water. They are not suitable as an all-weather road tyre.

So SSR's are more Track focused....still seems SO2's are the road tyre to have?
