Porsche 928 rises from the grave

Mighty GT coupé to take on Ferrari

The new 928?
The new 928?
Not content with plotting a baby SUV (see today's other Porsche story), Porsche also plans a new 928 style GT coupé – which has now been publicly admitted. Using the Panamera as the starting point, the car will be shorter and go head to head with the Bentley GT Continental and Ferrari 612 Scaglietti.

Chances are it'll be motivated by the Cayenne's 4.5-litre bi-turbo V8. This potent motor offers 521bhp and 5,500rpm and 531lb-ft of torque as tuned for the Cayenne. It pushes the bulky off-roader to 62mph in 5.2 seconds so imagine what it might do for a slippery GT coupé.

We've stretched this pic of a 911 Carrera S to give an indication of what it might look like...

Hopefully if will look like a revamped version of the old 928.

Rather than another 911 look alike.

I have to admit, I can't actually notice the "stretch" in the picture, although I think I've been affected by all the arty-farty photos that go into the magazines and brochures, perhaps i'm used to seeing stretched pictures! Just give me a brochure full of power curves and statistics, you can keep the pictures of the car kerb-crawling in Monaco or stuck in some sand dune!

A new 928 will be interesting, and i'm glad Porsche aren't being complacent and squandering the market's current love affair with the marque. Doubt it will be too close to the Carrera's looks, as it's probably going to be front engined I'm thinking it will be like a Cayman with a stretched bonnet and different lights.

I have to say I was just thinking that Porsche should do that today!

Personally, I think a remake of the 928's beautiful shape would be best... Everything looks like a 911 now. cayenne, cayman, boxster. Lets have something different please Porsche!

It's sarcasm, as in "will it look just like a 911?" just like the rest of the range.

For god sakes Porsche just hire a designer already, it's not like you can't afford one.

I hope they manage to make something interesting, I quite liked the original 928. I really hope this car comes out, it would show that Porsche isn't just concentrating on silly soft-roaders.

The 997 is a gorgeous car. There's no doubt the Panamera will look similar to the rest of the Porsche range, but inevitably on closer inspection will have a number of minor detail changes that will help add to a subtle but different whole.

There is nothing wrong with all the Porsche range having similar design cues, almost all manufacturers adopt the same strategy. Even Lotus are guilty with the new Europa!

If Porsche styling was suspect, I'd be more concerned, but as it isn't it's not really a problem.

It'll be a stunner.

I wonder whether that whole new 928 thing would have an impact on the prices of old and cherished 928s. Not that I am biased, mind.

I have to agree. I am a current owner, and have had about 12 other Porsches and I'm bored sick with Porsche styling at the moment - the Porsche styling dept is a one trick pony.

You rang?

Beauty as they say is in the eye of the beholder and for me all Porsche's (except perhaps the Cayenne) hit the spot. Yes allright, they're not Aston DB9's or someother exquisite beauty but I can see beauty in amongst the ugliness and for me at least it's a Porsche every time. Especially bearing in mind that they are without a doubt the best sportscars/supercars on the planet....nuff said.

I cannot believe that I am reading this... The 928 is the only Porsche which is really dateless. Look at the purity of the form and the simplicity of the lines. Then think about the fact that it was penned by W Mobius wa-y-y back in 1972. A 928 GTS does not look out of place even next to a 997s today. It would be great if Porsche was to take the old 928 basic form and update it for the 2000s... I for one would never give up the ergonomics of the original 928 dashboard for the "Designed by Stevie Wonder" 911 cockpit...

I think you are missing the point, anniesdad. Some of us really like virtually everything else about owning Porsches and wish they could dedicate as much time and effort to styling innovation as they do to creating tough, reliable, fast and exciting cars that we can drive hard for many years, unlike the fragile nonesense from most other sportscar manufacturers. Its time for a serious design makeover.

If I have, it wouldn't be the first time. It's ok for Porsche to take the styling off in a different direction a'la Bangle, the Panamera might be the start...who knows. But to criticise a car before design proposals have even been seen is a bit naff don't you think?

Is it not OK to actually like a certain car design? Have we all got to be sheep?

Maybe I forgot to add the IMHO.
