In the week running up to collecting my 968 coupe, I can help but think of ways to improve its handling, perfomance, ride etc.

It already has 17" cups & a roll bar.

What do you experts think?

I would appreciate your thoughts & ideas.

Cheers.

Superchip, sports exhaust and a free flow airfilter for starters.

Make sure you have the VarioCam checked or you will be in for a big bill!!

Forgot to say it has a stainless steel exhaust!

I had it checked over by a mate who knows Porsche.

Thinking of removing the rear seats & dropping in a couple of race seats.

That is of course after I have upgraded to Big Reds & put in some Konis!!

without sounding like a killjoy, i think you should leave it be for a bit. get used to the handling and performance - you might be pleasantly surprised. then if and when you upgrade, you will be able to judge the mods better, and to appreciate them more.

ok, ok, i'm a killjoy

edited for spellings again - grrr!

Checkout the 968 site www.968uk.com/ plus the forum that hangs off it - a lot of details on performance & handling mods there.

Not a killjoy of course not...;-)

I have looked on the 968 forum which is full of great info, I was keen to see if anyone here had any experience in doing what I am looking to do.

Still miss my 964..:-(

All depends on how fast you want to go. In my opinion the perfect package is something like 9m+1 Supercharger, Big Reds, KW handling kit, which equates to a 420bhp 968 Clubsport that passes GT3s on trackdays.....

The promax chip is a must because it smooths the torque curve and makes it much more driveable (although you will loose the variocam kick). The K&N filters seem the norm and probably improves the breathing. Induction kits also help and a few 968 owners are running them.

I have a chip, K&N, Iridium plugs a drilled aribox and a DeCat fitted to mine. I doubt there is much increase in power but it sounds good and breathes better. It all depends on how healthy your engine is too. Since I have had the cams replaced it is flying and better then ever.

The next step is probably brakes and then suspension (KW is good) and then a supercharger!!!

I would just enjoy the car first and get used to it, there are already excellent as there are. As you know we are fairly local so if you want to meet up when you get the car give me a shout.

I still get a little kick at 4000rpm with my Promax chip fitted!

A KW3 set up fitted is going to cost you around £1600, bigger brakes getting on for £1k, lsd £2k, plus you'll find a whole lot of little bits and pieces that add up once a specialist starts working on the car.

Why not just start with some uprated brake pads & fluid, a proper 4wd alignment and an airfield day? Total cost £400 and you'll know where you stand.

Forget the 968 you are about to pick up and buy Del's LHD CS instead. Already had many of the mods done already and is agreat car for the money. Sadly Del is no longer with us, but I know that he loved this car and it was looked after accordingly.

Give them a call you will not be disappointed.

Del's is a great car - but a bit pricey IMO.

Ibbo - get a promax chip - the only off the shelf chip worth getting and cheap as chips too. As others have said, wait and get used to your car before modding - only you will know where you feel it is lacking, so wait until you know the car. Also, no point in spending lots of money on mods when you don't know fully what condition the car is in. Better to save the pennies for any urgent maintenance that might crop up in the near future.

Hi all, & thanks for the point paulburrell.

Unfortunately I have paid my deposit on the coupe. If I had seen it before then it would have tempted me, although my budget was tight initially & I wouldnt want to offend those dealing with dels estate.

It does look exactly how I would want mine set up though....

There's an article in this months 911&PW from a 944 Lux owner, including dyno results before / after the promax chip. He was pretty disappointed with no real improvement in power, just the torque pushed a little higher up the rev range.

I think the effects of an off-the-shelf chip are very much dependent on the condition of the engine. I was one of the first people to test the Promax chip and was previously of the school of thought that if the car could have been better, Porsche would have done it. I was sceptical to say the least. I wasn't bothered about figures etc. just whether it felt quicker - and it did. Not scientific, I know, but what else matters other than how your car feels, unless you are racing? My car was a low miler with the engine in top nick. Seat of the pants results from an awful lot of people say that the Promax chip is a great buy.

From a more scientific point of view, there was a huge test of chips done by the 968 guys across the pond last year - it was discussed and argued about ad nauseum on the forums over there. Promax came out second of all the chips performance wise, and that was only on a technicality - I can't recall the winner or why it was deemed so, but VFM the promax chip came out top.

Thanks david, very informative.

I think I will follow the sensus. Drive my car as is for a few months to establish what I feel it may need.

If it needs a tweek, it will get done before Le Mans!!!

OT I know, how many '68s are going to LM this year??

me too. if i'm concnetrating i can actually discern two little shelves, one at about 2-2.5k rpm (below which very little happens) and then still quite a big surge at around 4k rpm which i assume is the variocam kicking in. Its smoother with the promax chip but by no means seamless. dont mind though, makes me feel like ive got a little turbo in there
