Hey Guys,
With all makes of cars getting more and more power it is getting to the point that the flat 6 N/A engine will struggle to keep up with nissans and big engined domestics.
What if Porsche came out with a new, mid/rear engine 911 with a flat 8 eigine? Use the rear seat room for the bigger engine. A twin turbo flat 8! Now were talking.

A N/A flat 6 may struggle to keep up but that could be Porsche's thinking behind bolting turbos on to it. Developed the 911 to the point that it no longer wants to kill the driver for any minor indescretion, do you think they really want to increase the weight out back?

They`ve already thought of it and beaten you to it by 2 cyclinders. It`s called a Carrera GT.
Anyway you don`t need 7 litres, sorry 450 cubic inches,(actually slightly less but who`s counting) to make a car go quickly.
I was trying to explain cars like the Ford Sierra Cosworth (122 cu), and the Renault 5 turbo (85 cu) to someone whilst in the states & they just didn`t get it.
Even something like a GT3 at 220 cu is pocket sized. In Europe you forget we have things called corners !
I`ve got a 495 cubic inch engined vehicle in my collection at the moment and to be honest don`t think it that quick, I struggle to get much over 80 out of her so not sure cubes are necessarily the answer.

A rear engine flat 8 would be challenge because of the length of the engine meaning even more weight and chassis/body behind the rear axle line. Mid engined might work but as Henry points out there's already a V10 and then there's a V8 from the Cayenne.
I'm guessing Porsche is only sticking with the flat 6 in order to keep a link to the original 911. Being able to use it in the Boxster/Caymen is a side benefit. They've gone to a lot of trouble and expense to develop two new engines; we'll see more of them in other cars.

European answer: Improve the engineering and tune it to go faster both round corners and in straight lines preferably removing weight in the process (a la Colin Chapman).
American answer: Whats the biggest heaviest engine that will fit? Corners? Pah dont worry about them! Lol!

Surely if this was the case then the Americans would have W24 engines etc. i.e. bigger is better, right?
But in general the favourite engine in the US is the V8 config - obviously in generally bigger capacities to the average UK engine (cheap oil, presumably).
The UK / Euro / Jap engines seem to have a greater degree of variety (straight threes, fours, flat fours, fives, V fives, straight sixes, V sixes, V8, V10, V12, W12, W16 etc.
IIRC there's a sweet spot for combustion chamber size for high-revving petrol car engines, and in general UK / Euro engines tend to increase cylinders rather than end up with paint-pot sized cylinders if greater capacity is needed. Efficiency and all that (and with efficiency comes lower emissions).
Personally I love V8s but they make little sense as 2 litre engines (as many UK cars are) and, to be honest, aren't ideal for 3.6-3.8 litre engines like the 911 motors. If we had a 5 litre 911 then yeah, 8 cylinders would make sense.
Presumably a flat 8 would also be perfectly balanced if run like 2 scooby boxers - however if you've got 8 cylinders to play with then you can also get perfect balance with a V configuration which makes much more sense packaging wise. Unless of course you're looking for lowest centre of gravity race car style...
