its in the sales training handbook for the service dept im sure. (page 14 Customers dont know much about thier expensive brakes, tell most of them they need replacing, most wont bat an eylid)

Oh you're so cynical, but I'm sure you're right.

In preparation for this I'll mic them up before it goes in. Then I can present my figures against theirs should they recommend replacement.

Last time I did this to catch out an unscrupulous Fiat dealer and ended up getting the "service" for free

So have you checked your brakes yourself?

Its not the individual parts costs that's horrendous - its the fact that you need:

Two front discs.
Two rear discs.
Eight brake pads.
Assorted anti-squeal shims (numbers of 'em)
Four Brake pad wear sensor looms

...it soon adds up!

So make sure you really need to do it!

I got twenty thousand miles and eighteen track days out of mine - admittedly at the end they were utterly shagged but, hey, I thought that was pretty damn good!

How do you decide that brakes are ' utterly shagged' ?? .. It sounds like a good brake lifetime limit to me!!

Just to balance out, my OPC didn't recommend I replace my brakes. Even when I sent the car there and said, "I'm not happy with the brakes".

When they are replaced, you suddenly discover that heal and toeing has suddenly becomes much easier !

And the ABS get's a chance to strut it's stuff !!

Hi, on the last service my OPC told me that the car (996 02 Targa) would need new brakes with in next 5-6000 miles. Do I want them to change the brakes now while the car is with them?. I said no. They said fine. I think that is fair dont you?

Try www.gsfcarparts.com, my friend brought some Porsche discs and pads for his 993 at the branch in Leeds for peanuts (sorry can't remember the exact price)

Hell that's so true it's not wrong. Was once advised I needed new front discs yesterday, the next week an independent measured them with me watching and reckoned about another 10,000 miles. Guess who was closest...

I need new pads and discs all round on my 964 but I have got 993tt brakes on the front and 964RS on the back. The pads are going to be £75 plus vat from Strasse and I believe that they are genuine part too.

Just my 2p there.
