This mod was "all the rage" about 2 years ago, I did the mod on my 3.4 996 C2, but only for a few weeks as wasn't 110% sure it wouldn't damage something somewhere, though I was assured it wouldn't (and I had no issues)
Made the car sound much better, and the caps are free samples you can order (I still have one knocking around somewhere)

Reverse it by removing said items you previously fitted ?

Whoopsie! feelin a bit MORE stupid now!

I had it in my head that this 'Orange cap' was plugging something .. therefore a hole was made , which can be difficult to reverse ....
Ah sh1te .. I don't know !!!

Somebody tell us how this bloody thing works!!

Looking at this www.smiley.net/orangecap.htm It would appear to blank off some kind of "bypass" pipe between the air filter housing and the inlet pipework
Seemingly it's a mod to increase induction noise NOT exhaust note or loudness.

fabspeed have somthing similiar, but this replaces the pipe that the "orange cap mod" plugs, they call it the cold air kit, some call it the coke can, whatch this vid I am told this is the same effect the orange plug has on the sound of your 996, the video shows before and after the installation.

I did it a couple of years ago. The plug just pops in (& out just as easily when you want to reverse it) You can fit (& remove) it in a couple of minutes.
Makes the car sound much better. I guess its induction noise rather than exhaust noise it changes, rather like the Snorkel mod on the Boxster.
I removed it as I wasn't completely sure of the long term effects of having it in, though I have never heard of anyone having any problems at all with it.

Actually I changed my car to a C4S so wanted to remove it anyway !

Sounds great on the before and after vid .. I think the 'enthusiastic' narrator is possibly hyping the increased performance slightly!! (note ecstatic type woo hoo-ing!)
I'd like to hear what the experts have to say about what the mod affects might be ,long term though.. It looks like the inlet bypass is more or less blocked.

Fabspeed not averse to making over-hyped power claims for their exhausts, so I'd take any claims of increased power for this mod with a pinch of salt.
From what the over enthusiastic gentleman said in this clip, the car is fitted with a BMC filter (not sure if this is just a replacement element or removal of the filter box altogether and replacement with a Supercup filter assembly ?) If it is the latter, it would be noisier !

im not sure about the power increase, the extra noise was more interesting

Didn't get any power increase (none that I could tell anyway) Didn't do it for that reason, but the increase in sound was nice.

Has anyone done it on a 997S? Is it the same system?

I've had the cold air induction kit and bmc f1 filter on mine for the last 12k with no probs at all. (from 2k upto current 14k in just over a year)
Fitted with the fabspeed max-flow back boxes it sounds fantastic and really howls when on cam!

got mine direct from fabspeed for about £830 all including delivery, fitted myself (10 mins for induction kit+air filter) and about an hour each side for the back boxes witht the help of a mate.

IMHO it seems to breath easier and there is slight improvement in acceleration when really gunning it.
Well recommended.

I've had a Fabspeed CAI for 18 months now, I use this with a BMC F1. This with a PSE results in 107.8dB

It feels faster however I do take it off every now and then just to feel the difference.
