i thought 996 carbon doors saved 8kg per side. surely less than that saved by thin windscreen and plastic back and sides?
ill bet the racecar wiring loom weighs a fair bit less too...

I'm clueless (to state the obvious), but I'd reckon that a plastic door weighs 20kg less than road car standard:
- plastic rather than glass window
- no window motor, switches, wires or track
- no door card
- no storage pocket
- flyweight internal door handle, versus heavy pair on each standard door
- plastic outer surface and frame
- lighter hinges, without cams

anyway i remember reading the carbon doors save 8kg . with hindsight that could be over a striped metal one excluding glass etc... which sounds about right

If you just push a standard door and then one from a Cup car it seems like there's a lot more than only 8kg in it.
BTW, I think that Ruf were working on a source for doors in which the entire structural bit - skin, frame and interior panel - was CF rather than steel.

see my link above and scroll down. seems the 'mericuns beat then to it but cant quite tell if the inside is cf or plastic. of course no idea about quality etc... but price looks good.
Carbon doors save about 10kg per door, but that is replacing only the door skin and retaining the re-inforcement bars, windows, electric-lifters, door panels etc.
I hace seen 996 Carbon 1 piece doors in person with built-in perspex (macrolon) sliding windows (a la F40), so no door bars, or window lifters/motors etc. This saves a lot more per side, something like 25kg per door in total I believe, but then you require door bars on your roll-cage as you have no side-impact protection anymore.

The composite doors on a race car save masses more than 8kg. They are totally different to a road car door and in no way interchangable, there isn`t any room for internals, (locks, window regulator, impact bars etc). It`s purely for the race car which obviously has a roll cage to strengthen the side of the car.
It wouldn`t afford any theft security, (the plastic windows are quite flimsy) and similarly not much in the way of weather protection either.
I would have thought 20 - 25kg per side saving would be about right.
Our car was weighed last weekend at the start of the season and came in at 1197kg with an empty fuel tank. The car is set up for endurance racing and so will be a little heavier than standard.
