Hi Guys

I have a 996TT with a few mods done by PSI, one being a brake conversion.

They are 355mm discs using the standard 4 pot callipers.

I've just been told they are a special GT3 brake conversion and need to be specially made - cost £900 !! With labour and VAT I am looking at £1200 !

Are there any other options you could suggest, Brembro etc. It may be cheaper to start again ? I already have some unused Pagid Green pads which I would like to use, hence I may need to stay with 4 pot callipers.

Thanks for any suggestions

I got my 350 discs from Gert at carnewal, far cheaper than UK prices.
Now running rattling Brembos, far superior to the standard discs, however not sure if these will work on 4 pots.

Are the discs cross drilled or solid? Sounds to me like you have the standard Porsche Mk2 GT3 crossdrilled front discs. However, these usually come fitted with the 6 pot callipers. Standard Porsche discs at 355 mm will cost close to £1000 a pair from Porsche and will crack to buggery in no time at all if used on track. The alternative is the Alcon or Brembo floating disc settup that both use a hat and floating disc assembly. JZ Machtech sell them as do Parr. These initially cost c £1000 a pair(ex fitting) but when they need to be changed then you only change the disc and not the hat. Cost I believe is closer to £600. Not sure if these replacement systems will fit on a 996 turbo. Call Steve McHale at JZ and he'll advise you on suitability.

PS the original 996TT discs were the same size as the original Mk1 GT3 discs.

Hi Paul
Thanks for your info, the discs are crossdrilled and yes they are cracked to buggery ! PSI suggested there is a conversion to allow more cooling as it seems that the heat has caused the cracking. The discs themselves are not worn at all.

You can get brake cooling kits, but I understand that that will not help overcome the cracking problem particularly if used on track. To get better disc life you need to change to a floating type arrangement without the cross drilling. Alternatively change the discs back to the standard turbo size Porsche items which cost about £400 a pair, but still crack when used on track.

Floating discs with anti-glaze grooves rather than holes are indeed an excellent conversion they last forever, (well alright but a good long while - we use a single set for a 24 hour race). The 6 pot conversion shouldn`t be too hard if indeed you need it - and make sure you need it before shelling out the ackers, callipers from Porsche off the shelf ought to do the job. If you want a feet on the ground approach without any fluff and "talking the game up" give Steve Winter at Jaz (Wembley) a call. He runs our GT3 cup car and has oodles of years experience running cars in the Porsche Cup, Porsche Club & Open series as well as our Britcar endurance entry.

Thanks Henry

I'll give Steve a ring as he serviced my car last time.
