Never been the biggest Porsche fan ever, but happened to find myself in a Porker showroom today. Obviously im going to really annoy some people by saying i cannot stand the Boxster, but the Cayman, love it.
The one i saw was in a gorgeous Dark Navy Blue, red calipers, tan leather and it was na S. Really think it looks a superb machine. £50k doesnt look too bad a price either.
What are they like to drive, anyone know ?

it is a pain isn't it ? I frequently have the same problem, they're just bloody everywhere, just like like newsagents.........on every corner ?

Best get yourself a test drive next time you "mistakenly" find yourself in a showroom..............having "mistakenly" dialled a wrong number and "mistakenly" arranged to drive one one!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I test drove one on track and didn't like it. It understeered too much and when sliding just spun up the inside wheel (lack of LSD).
Evo this month are also a little dismissive of it on track.
On the road it is a nice car though and probably very similar performance to my 997S in a straight line.
Personally I would not bother buying one and get a Boxster S which I think looks better, is just as good a performer on the road and is cheaper.

I've had mine since mid December and it just keeps growing on me. Granted I spent half a day at Millbrook yesterday in the hands of a very capable Porsche instructor so am still a little more biased than normal. But, it does exactly what is says on the tin and more if driven by someone who knows the car

I picked up some excellent tips for settling the car into bends and balancing the car on the throttle on the exits. I know it will take a lot of time and practise to get right but from being in the car whilst turn ins were demonstrated it will certainly be fun when I get it right It is also quite practical when going away for the weekend and I can get my golf clubs in the rear hatch easily so ticks all boxes for me.
Each Porsche model has it's own traits and positive/negative points. Reading this forum you will see all sorts of opinions about each model, particularly the Cayman, mostly from people who don't actually own one
or who are happy to make comments after a brief test drive. I would recommend you listen to owners, take non owner comments with a pinch of salt, and go and drive the car yourself and make your own mind up. I am truly happy with my choice and will be keeping the car for a while as I now know it is so much better than me it is going to be a challenge to learn how to drive it and get the most out of it......which will be fun

I guess that is not long enough to have an opinion, in the same way a magazine should not be allowed to comment on a model unless they purchase it and take it home and keep it in their garage for, a year or maybe longer?

Everyone has their opinions I was just pointing out that they should be taken lightly unless the person offering the opinion was an owner who has had an opportunity to use the car in their day to day routines. You drove the Cayman and chose to buy/keep your 997. Far too many people on here chucking in their 2p's worth based on a 30 minute OPC test drive, or worse still "the Cayman is for people who can't afford a 911". Each to their own.

I had a 997S and a deposit down on a Cayman S with the intention of changing if the Cayman S lived up to expectations. In my opinion Porsche have failed to deliver a proper sports car even if it would have trod on the 997 toes. Were they to build a lightweight Cayman RS I would swap in an instant. Were they to offer a Cayman S with a sports suspension (not PASM) and an LSD I might also change. A 997S is too big and heavy for trackwork and a Cayman S with the correct spec would be perfect.
So and I am not saying a Cayman S is not a good car, if it were my money I would save some and get a Boxster S.

Hence different requirements from different owners, something Porsche have to take into account when launching a new car. I'm 100% with you on the LSD/suspension front and am looking into options to resolve this. I'm awaiting feedback from TechArt about their 3.8 litre upgrade package and am also keeping half an eye on the Ruf and Ninemeister options involving superchargers. The key for me would be the inclusion of a LSD in the package I choose if I feel the overall enhancement to the car is going to be worth it for me. The car does desperately need a LSD but I understand why Porsche didn't fit one as it would have trod hard on the toes of the their 911 icon. If I do go ahead with any upgrade I'll gladly bring it along to a meet to see if you feel it was worth the extra money.

Why? Because of it's negative image?
As far as the Cayman S is concerned, it is a great steer, feels lighter on it's feet than the Boxster even if the Boxster is actally lighter but IMHO doesn't sound as good as the Boxster. Out of the two I'd rather have the Cayman S because of it's extra performance but then again you're spending Mk 1 GT3/used 996 TT money and this is where my money would go.

Different people like different things. Personally I don't like the Boxster enough (only because I rated my S2000 so highly), I didn't want a 996, and didn't think the 997 was worth the cost. So for me, I got the car I wanted (performance, quality, looks) at the price I wanted. Waahey!
