924 Questions - please help!!
Discussion
Hi,
Picked up my new toy at the weekend. Got a 1988 Porsche 924S
Getting out on to the open road produced some alarming results, not seen on my 5 minute suburban test drive though. What do people think....
I reckon the suspension bushes have seen better days - the car doesn't feel very well planted during cornering, particularly on bumpy roads and has a tendancy too wander if pushed.
Theres a constant whine from the transmission when its engaged and a higher pitched noise when you put the clutch in. Is this normal?? I'm told the latter is well known and Porsche refused to rectify it on warranty because it was harmless. Don't know if the former is just due to the cut of the gears?
Can anyone suggest good replacement shocks and bushes for a 924S?
On the up side, it goes very well in a straight line and theres plenty of low speed comedy oversteer to be had
A few other questions(!).....
PH seems to have a distinct bias towards the uber-beetles, can anyone suggest a good forum for 924/944 owners.
Secondly, can anyone recommend which Haynes (or similar) manual I should get for a late (high compression ratio) 924S? There doesn't appear to be one - presumably I get a 944 manual??
Many thanks,
Chris.

Not 100% sure about the gearbox whine. My 86 944 whines on the over run and after a bit of reserch I'm sure its the pinion bearings, which apparently will last a long time with no problems. Maybe a change of gearbox oil will help. I've heard good things about Swepco oil.
Haynes manuals for 944s are not brilliant but cheap enough on ebay, probably worth getting one as alot of it will be relevant.
You can also get repair manuals on CD from ebay.

When I was looking for the Haynes 944 manual on ebay they were going for more than brand new ones, the ebay sellers were claiming that they are pretty rare. Not so - just look in the American Manuals section on the Haynes site and get a brand new one.
chris,
there is only one place to post 924 related questions.Go to www.924.org and ask away. There is a huge wealth of knowledge regaring these models there. As the guy's on there tend to their own spanner work, you wont have a question they don't know.
Regards,
Steve

I drive an 84 944 which in some respects will be similar to your 924s. The car should not wander or feel unstable on bumpy roads. I would strongly suspect the wishbone ball joints and dampers are causing this but there are other areas to check, the tie rods, the steering rack itself etc.
Does your car have anti roll bars? If not you will get a fair bit of roll and roll oversteer but that would be normal. I would definitley suggest you get the geometry checked (not just front wheel alignement) as all Porsche cars have completely adjustable suspension and with age and use it will all eventually move away from the original settings.
Hope this is of some help.

Think I need a 944 manual for the engine and a 924 one for suspension??
To clarify the handling issues. The steering feels a bit imprecise and the whole thing 'wobbles' a little. There is immense understeer (at speeds where you shouldn't be troubling the tyres adhesion) and the ride is crashy, although doesn't feel underdamped as such. There isn't a huge ammount of roll - certainly not uncontrolled - but the car squats very dramatically under power.
Any further input very welcome.
Thanks,
Chris.

My 924s does squat under power. It has red Koni Special dampers fitted, which I understand is the "softer" option. To reduce weight transfer, either Koni Yellow, or other replacement shocks need to be fitted.
The ride on mine sounds immesurably better than yours though. Get the geometry checked. The front (pressed steel) L-frames/lower wishbones can distort with kerbing apparently, which may have happened on yours. I can hang the tail out quite happily on 2nd gear corners (though it does take more encouragement in the 924s than the Cerbera!)

Hi,
Softer relative to the original Porsche ones?
If not, how would you say they compare?
I'm looking to set the car up for fast road (i.e english bumpy b-road) rather than track use, so would like it maybe a little stiffer than it currently isn't, but not too extreme.
If I'm very rough I can provoke the tail end, but because of the lack of precision I've only dared to do this at very low speeds! I'm convinced its not supposed to be like this and sure it'll be great throttle adjustable fun when its restored. That said, the front tyres have seen better days and this may also be a contributing factor.

Hi Chris,
Softer compared with available modern options. Ie Koni specials (red)=soft, Koni Sport(yellow)=harder. I think the latter are more "modern" in feel and still very acceptable on the road, but do sharpen up the handling.
I'm looking for the same type of solutions eventually, but will book the car in with Neinmeister for them to do the job properly. Most M030/986 bits should fit the 924S, so there's no excuse in my book in driving around in a blancmange when we can have a lighter, albeit less-powerful version of the same. I prefer having bought a softer car & be able to harden it up. At least the previous owner in both our cases did not loosen every seamjoint by running 400 lb springs and dampers to match
My 924s needs some serious front brakes (..or possibly I need more driving tuition). Is yours OK stopping?

Hi,
Mine has rather squidgy pedal feel, but still more than enough force to overcome the feeble front end grip. Think they'd be dinstinctly underwhelming with a properly set up car and some fresh tyres though.
So you reckon even the red Koni's are firmer than the original factory dampers? Might be tempted to go with the yellows if you think they're still a good on-road comprimise.
Doesn't seem to be much interest on the front engined cars on this forum, so you might be better off emailing me.

Worth going to Titanic & also Porsche-1.net
Also worth becoming a member of TIPEC, out of 10 regular attendees
to my South East London North Kent group only one doesn't have either a 924 or 944!
Thanks - I'll take a look.
Whats TIPEC? I can find references to it on the net, but no actual homepage or anything?

You couldn't have looked very hard
Try www.tipec.org.uk/ I'm not a member or anything.. Re the other stuff, I think people are generally embarassed to admit they have less than 300 BHP on PH, but it's still one of the friendliest, highest quality info sites. Pelican and Rennlist are good, but some of the info tends to be of variable usefullness. PH tends to be well moderated.
Hi to all above…
As this thread is turning into a cool 924-944….Brother and Sister chat I hope you don’t mind me joining im..I‘m called The Hobbit but really I’m a sweat little black 944 2.7 born 1989 but christened Jan 1990. So for my first few months I sat around with a posy of 911’s preening them selves in front of mirrors..I had a job to do and since I first fired up I haven’t missed a heart beat, missed the odd service but I am still going strong but the Lady I let believe she owns me needs to sort my shocks out….Please Darling..come on other wise I will bite back just when your checking your crazy blue hair in the mirror…Hint hint keep your eyes on the road…I do…so please!
And the shock???? Any other brother or Sister got some option advice?? Oh ye and she actually can drive! Well sometimes…hahahaha…She loves working me hard round the country lanes…So no softies please…and a good online shop..I'v got her plastic..haha

That's a definite
/ WTF? from me too... I *think* you're after somewhere to buy new shocks, in which case www.promaxmotorsport.com do a lot of parts for 944's.
Just a note that your car sounds like it has too much front toe in - easy to check without too much cost.
Rear dampers - unless they have compression damping will not alter squat because most std dampers only damp the recoil direction.
Dampers with compression damping would help as would coil over springs or altering the rear torsion bar settings but if the car is to be a low cost toy (as most of these are) that would be too expensive.
