996tt heat shields

Having my 996tt in for a minor service, (done 14k) 2003. Had a call saying both the turbo heat shields have perished and need replacing 571 gbp and there is corrosion on the inside of the front discs. I have said not to worry with the corrosion as I havnt givien the car a good thrashing for some weeks and it sits outside but given the goahead for the turbo shields.

Anyone had this before? is not under the extented warrenty.

Your words of wisdom and experience as always is appreciated.

I believe this is pretty common. Certainly the heat shields have gone on my 60K mile 996TT. They are just that, a simple bracket with a small steel shield. Mine rattle a little but still protect the turbos fine so I have not replaced them.

Yes, common fault. If they're still hanging in there and the rattling isnt bugging you then leave them as it'll only happen again with the new ones...

I will check an old invoice as I had my heat shields done, and was charged peanuts for it (as I remember so little it was a no brainer to get it done) will check. Perhaps I didn't have the same job done as they are quoting you.

yeah i had mine done last month as part of the service and it was peanuts....theres something not right if there saying 500odd quid.

Perhaps not peanuts but most of that is labour I would imagine.

In my experience the heatshields don't need replacing, the nuts attaching the shields do, as they corrode causing the heatshields to rattle (as they are corroded they are therefore very difficult to remove & replace)

Knowing OPC's they have quoted for a full job, ie replacing the heatshield themselves, when probably only the nuts need renewing. I would check this.

Mine needs doing, rattles but they quoted me £700 as OPC claimed my exhaust has to be taken off - hence I left it

Right phoned Porsche and apparently it's a 4 hour job (yeh right) and costs between £500-700 and they want me to pay for it!!

Thats to replace the heatshields I take it ?
All heatshields are, are pieces of metal. They only rattle because the bolts holding them on corrode.
If it were me I would either look under the car to really see if the shields themselves are corroded and need replacing, or its just the bolts that need replacing. If its the latter then you will save yourself a small fortune.
