993 TT vs 996 TT. Which is best?
Discussion
If you are spending out 50k - 60k, considering the only slight difference in power, which is the best car?
I know its a broad question, but in terms of handling, acceleration, exhaust note and on street presence, which car is the one a driver would be happier with?
I rarely see 993 TT's these days, as opposed to 996 TT's. I am very lucky to own a 996 TT but keep thinking that the 993 TT might just have that extra spark that makes it really special. I love driving my car, but am I missing out?
Sould I look into owning a 993 TT before there are no good one's left?
Is the grass greener?

Andrew,
Having been lucky enough to have owned both, my view is that the 995 is a far superior car. The traditionalists will probably be up in arms, but the 996 has more space inside, has a better interior, handles better, and is easier to live with. As DeR suggests, you should look at some simple mods e.g. louder exhaust, ECU map, race cats, etc.
Just my tuppence worth!

996TT is 95%/5% rear wheel drive bias under normal driving, until it needs to divert more to the front.
R.
Actually it's 35% front & 65 % rear in normal driving conditions, with "up to" 95% possible to rear & 40% to the front if conditions require!
Back to the question...........
The grass is always greener, less is more and a change is as good as a rest!!
As some one said earlier test drive one & see what YOU think. Can't see it myself though!!!

Doesn't the 993tt feel more like a rwd car and the 996tt more 4wd / understeer ?
Dave - your response is interesting - how come you've gone back to a 993 and surely spent more on it than a 996tt would cost ?
Thanks
Very good point. The short answer is that if I had known then what I know now, I would have hung on and waited for the 996tt prices to drop and then bought one. As it was, I was keen to have a cabrio, but wanted the performance as well. The obvious option would have been a 996tt cab, but that was outside of my budget.
As it stands, (once I get the car back in a couple of weeks) I'll have the wind in my hair and the sort of performance (520/530 bhp)to embarrass a standard 996tt
So what you are all saying is the 996 TT does what it says on the tin. It's an evoloutinary upgrade of the previous model and, by that definition, in all objective ways, better. But, I must agree with some of you, the 993 TT has that extra street presence, perhaps due to its rarity.
Now that thats solved, which is better, 997 or 996?

Agreed!
I admit that the 993tt is a purer driving experience but if thats what you want then you should be looking for a 993RS or a 996GT3
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder of course, but I consider the 993tt to be the better looking of the two by far. However, though I love the shape of the 993tt, the technological and performance advantages of the 996tt are significant, so by just about any other criteria other than aesthetics it must win the day.
The decision then is a personal one - form over function or function over form? Do you want a stupendously competent modern supercar in the teutonic mould or a gorgeous classic that won't be quite as competent but can send shivers down your spine just by looking at it?
