Dear all..
What are the early signs of head gasket failure?
My 86 944 lux has done 146k and runs sweet enough - i think.. but i do get the occasional bout of white smoke out the back for 5 mins or so (after warming up that is) - then seems to go away - my mate says this is a sign.. is he talking bunkum.
I burn off a bit of oil.. half a litre a month.. but had put this down to the clearences in the engine and the fact that my journey to work is only 10mins and thus things prob dont get hot enough to fully seal with varying expansion. and the fact that the car is old and leaks here and there
Also.. has anyone had to do a HG replacement on a 944 2.5.. is it £££ or £££££££!!

In terms of the oil consumption, half a litre probably isn't too bad as the manual mentions 1.5 litres per 1000km.
From my limited exprerience of these things, if you start to find mayonaise in the oil or the coolant reservoir, you might have a problem (although limited use during cold weather might also produce mayo round the oil filler cap).

I had an HG failure on my 944, it was bellowing out loads of white smoke at startup, and starting to run a bit hot in traffic (just above the upper middle white mark, rather than boiling).
When it finally went for good, it was blowing the coolant out of the overflow pipe once it got up to temperature...
It cost me about £1300 to put right at a local specialist (PCT in coventry), which included a welding up the cylinder head, which was very badly corroded due to some plank in the past running it on water only in the coolant rather than the proper corrosion inhibitor (antifreeze) mix.
To add to it all, the bastard warranty company also refused to pay out, the shysters.

I'm not losing any coolant so i'm hoping i've not got a real issue..
It does blow a load of white smoke out on start up, particulalry when pulling away, but it is cold in the mornings, so i've put that down to moisture condensing in the air.. i'll see how it behaves on warmer mornings..
